the best roguelike chess game I've ever played but the bar is in hell. the presentation is serviceable at best, soundtrack gets grating quickly, and the story is boring. the gameplay loop of collecting pieces and upgrading them is so short lived there's no time to get invested and pieces are balanced by changing the enemy's composition, not in comparison to eachother. There's alot of cool ideas here like the rocks and how pieces interact with them but there's no cohesion, so few of the game mechanics interact with one another. Roguelike chess is a hard type of game to make good and I commend the developer for a really solid attempt at it, but the Ouroboros is nothing worth revisiting if it's not on sale.

This is an amazing automation game that does not want to be an automation game. The art is phenomenal, the concept is great, but the core gameplay loop of exploration and doing quests just sucks. The majority of playtime is spent walking with a restrictive camera view through a randomly generated field, which the waypoint system helps with but not significantly. It is not clear what order you should progress the quests in and the characters have paragraph after paragraph when giving quests but will not repeat what your objectives are.

There's alot to try to make this work! The waypoint pinning helps with walking aimlessly to different points on the map, pinning a quest manually helps with figuring out what you even need to do, the teleportation you unlock later in the game helps reduce the absurd amount of travel, the recent buildables being available in the sidebar helps with the horrible to navigate building menu, but all of this is just putting a bandage on problems with the core gameplay loop just not being fun. You have to fight against the game to actually play it, and I'm hopeful that in later updates the game either figures out a better way to do exploration or just lets you ignore the story and play it detached from the village quest system.

cannot recommend this game highly enough. the main story has some good twists without being lorebait, the art and music are amazing, the combat has depth and feels really well balanced, the post game completionist content is great, and it's a great roguelike ontop of it all. go buy this game. go in blind.

This game's audio is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ painful. From the soundtrack's hypersonic frequencies, constant screeching of cicadas outside, the the ringing of the TV in the main menu/central hub, there is not a single point in the game where there isn't an incredibly loud >15hz sound at all times. I cannot believe this game is like this. The initial hour of gameplay is okay I guess, it keeps stopping you for forced tutorials and the controls are a bit wonky, feels like an asset flip but the idea is there. The constant ear piercing screeching present in every aspect of this game's audio made this an agonizingly painful experience and I think the Dev needs to see an ENT yesterday.

The devs are trying. They really are. But this is just an asset flip of "Easy Survival RPG", atleast ScrewUp replaced some of the default assets. They've done very little except make a new map that is incredibly barren and strip away the majority of the features before slowly adding them back in (like teasing character customization despite it literally being a feature built into the template). It's very frustrating seeing them asking for people to donate to the game in this state.

Game is still in development but the way it's progressing is incredible, the community is very friendly and the ghost interactions are already terrifying. Can't wait to see how it grows! ^^

Sorry chief, but this ain't it.

First and foremost, the game is unpolished as hell. The game seems to crash on a whim, the hero switching is sporadic on the keyboard and isn't even bindable on controller (making the game unplayable with a controller) but the only means of movement in the game otherwise is clicking with the mouse which makes it impossible to dodge traps later into the game. The story is incredibly vague and contrived and comes across as if it was roughly translated into English which, while not a deal breaker, doesn't help cove the actual lackluster game it frames. The gameplay is even worse, feeling completely devoid of any depth. You spam attacks and dodge the enemies and traps. That's all. It's a generic beatemup with no depth and dry levels, and it controls terribly. I know it's early access, but come on, make the game playable before you start selling it.

I got this game for about $2.50 in the Steam Winter Sale, but even when not on sale the game itself costs $10, so I am giving my opinion on this in the context of a 7 year old bargain-bin game. I grew up with this game, I bought this on the Xbox 360 in 2013. It's a very dated game with early sandbox mechanics and rudimentary combat, but between it's roguelite "breakdown" mode, interesting if cornily written main story, and the two DLC's bundled with it, it's definitely worth the current price point. The game itself is, at it's core, junk food and is proud of it, gladly queuing up simple missions to progress the plot and having barebones, stiff "cutscenes" if you can call them that. The combat is arcadey, with a focus on either knocking down and finishing zombies in a simplistic beat-em-up fashion or the over the shoulder shooting. The meat of the game is collecting resources, exploring new areas, building your base, managing your community, and dealing with bigger threats such as zombie hordes, infestations, and special zombies. If you like open-world games and resource gathering / base building, this is a good little feel good game.

My biggest warning is that this version of the game is poorly optimized, so if you have middling hardware you may have trouble running this game. This is because the Ambient Occlusion is mandatory on all the graphics settings, and it's poorly optimized in this port. There are mods that remove this effect and it helps me maintain stable framerates.
