Frostpunk 2 is definitely a different game than it's predecessor. If you are looking for a similar experience, then this might not be for you.

on it's own it's not bad, but not what I was fully expecting storywise from frostpunk.

Instead of intimately building the city yourself, you build a city through hexes. In frostpunk 2, there is no difference between wood and metal resources, it all gets lumped together into materials, which can be used to make either goods used to decrease crime and get heatstamps, or make prefabs, both of a new resource for building stuff. However, there are no longer any innately infinite resources that you can get easy like in frostpunk 1's wall drill vs saw mill. Instead, you rely on outposts, (let's put a pin in that though) which are as far as I know, infinite, or deep resources which are for the scale of the story mode, infinite. additionally, you have to manage tension and trust, as well as relations with political groups instead of hope and discontent.

instead you eventually search out to find oil, which is at the pseudoinfinite amount. this kickstarts the choice to defeat the frost, changing your fuel to just oil, and better heating, or embrace the frost, which gives you the outposts/settlements. One political group wants to defeat the frost, the other wants to embrace the frost.

overall, the story felt rushed. Especially the final act felt like it was finished too soon. In terms of story we have yet to see what the planned DLCs will bring. Additionally, the game doesn't feel as impactful. There's also a few annoyances here and there with the UI of districts when you click on them going 'off screen' and having to fight the camera to access that info, or buttons being covered up by the people's dialog boxes. But most annoyingly, sometimes a citizen will come up with a supposed problem you're facing. You either have to listen to them to promise them their solution, or blow them off, even if the supposed problem isn't a problem.

As it is, in practice it feels like it's a good game... that needs it's fixes here and there, but probably for a sale.

However, circling back to the pin in the outposts, as of right now, the time of writing this review, it feels like part of the game is broken and doesn't work properly. The settlement outposts give you a flow of resources. according to the game, you are supposed to be able to increase this through docks... however, the docks don't do this, but I believe they are supposed to because the law that also increases outpost output increases settlement output.

Essentially, one route is broken and doesn't work properly. And if one half of the game in main story mode seems broken and non-functioning I feel like I can't really recommend the game in this state because of it.

A city builder survival game, you build up a city to try and survive the cold cold cold everlasting winter. Manage discontent, and keep hopes up or else you will die, exiled by the very people that you failed to managed. Set up your resources to gather, and even find and build automotons to automate some of your jobs, so your workers don't have to.

Eventually, in the main scenario you will come with a choice.... do you enforce order...? Or guide people with faith? But... will you cross the line to save everybody? Or just yourself?

Also, bombastic music. One of the OSTs.... even though I've heard it before when my DM used it for combat music in encounters,.... CHILLS. (ha)

And that's just the base scenario! there's many more in the DLCs, From saving the last seeds... building a town from an abandoned generator, will you save as many refugees as you can and even the nobles? Saving a rundown town as much as you can.... how will you decide who to save...? to building one of the very generators that will try to save humanity... siding with the workers.... or the engineers... how many sacrifices are worth it?

Those are what I've played so far, and although they do get difficult, still worth it all the same.

I got this game on launch day. (TERRIBLY LONG DELAY too.) After playing it for a little bit more than an hour, I refunded it.

Controlls weirdly to me, compared to the other hack and slash neptunia spinoffs. There is a tutorial, but does get the basics for playing as Neptune down. Also beware of a glitch in the tutorial when you double-press 'enter' on the keyboard (was trying to get to sound settings as the initial dialouge-music sound mixing is HORRID, the pause button wasn't working. the voices are drowned out by the music in some of the early on cutscenes.). Will stack multiple of the side things telling you what to do for the tutorial, makig it nigh impossible to read the one you do have to do.
Without changing the AI yourself, the ranged characters (with my experience of only Blanc, the priest) will go close range. Something that RANGED characters really shouldn't do that often...?
In addition, the multiplayer is TERRIBLE if you aren't the host. You rubberband all over the place, and, for everyone, you are kicked out if you lose all your HP; if you are the host that means that the entire group is disbanded. Weird design choice.

The kicked out if loose all HP isn't excluseive to multiplayer. If you loose all your HP in the singleplayer campain, are also sent back to the hub. Not your entire party, just you. Doesn't matter if your AI controlled partners have HP left, you will still be sent back. (Again, weird design choice)

The main draw to the game is the characters and the humor. The graphics are also nice, but that's about it in my opinion. The alt character designs good too.

If you really want to get this game, I'd recomend you wait until there is a big sale, as this game, in my opinion, isn't really worth even ~$28.

A game that is fun through it's Humor. It's style may not be for everyone, as it is an anime style game, and not everyone will get the jokes due to it being very gamer orientated.

Gameplay, is not the strongest aspect of the game IMHO. It can get somewhat menotnous after a while, if you are grinding out quests to get certain endings.

SPOILERS FOR ONE OF THE ENDINGS.

This game also became my nomination for the steam awards for 'I'm not crying, there's something in my eye' award. The conquest end, more speciffically lowee. The twins..... just... ow... my heart.... also... chika's interaction.... those two moments... hit me the hardest emotionally. the twins actually made me tear up a bit.

update 2017: Wolrd is grim bruhs. get along bruhs. Don't kill other gode- NEPGEAR NEPTUNE WHAT ARE YOU DOING? NO! STOP THAT!

From a game standpoint, this is a good game. However, from a bullet hell standpoint, some things may be a turnoff.

First off, there is more than 1 difficulty level, unlike some reviews say. However, in order to change the difficulty, you have to go into the options menu.
In addition, this game is only in Japanese. However, there are Patches of it available.

Note that this is an older game. Therefore, if you run it on newer systems (without knowing how to get it to compatability mode) It will run slowly. What I did to solve this however, was go to the files for the game, right click on the game in the folder, then clicked Troubleshoot Compatability. Chose suggested settings, and it works like a charm. (For windows 10...)

-This bullet hell, unlike others has no focus mode. Therefore, when the bullets are coming at you fast with small gaps, you can't easily move slowly to get inbetween those gaps.
*EDIT!!!!*:Apperently it does... I was thinking Touhou, so the focus mode would have been on shift, instead of x like it is on this game. (X is bomb in touhou)
-? There is no punishment for loosing a life. In other bullet hells, you loose a level of shot strength. Not in this game however. So it feels like death in this game is inconsiquenstial.

More friendly to people who have not played this type of game before in the way of Autobomb (automatically use a bomb when hit) and hitbox shown. These are toggleable to be off if you so choose so, for those who are more experienced. (under the options menu).

That being said, I got this on sale, so my perception of it is with it at a lower price than it normally is. Also, this game is the company's first. For a first game, this is pretty good I'd say.
