Short version:

I absolutely loved this game. While some few hiccups along the way, overall a stellar experience.

Long version:

It is honestly very hard to put into words why I loved the game so much. Harder yet to find a reasonable comparison why I loved this game more than even Witcher 3 which is also one of the better games I've played.

If I had to boil it down to a single aspect, I would say it was the characters. Never before have I cared so much for characters within a video game. Their stories and the thoughts they brough out in me. An experience like no other. At least for me.

But the story itself also isn't bad. While at times predictable, it can also deliver unexpected surprises later in the game. Usually I like to read up on the story because I like to know what to expect, but here I just wanted to experience it first hand. And there was not a moment of regret had. But wait! There's more! Not only was the overall story good, so were the tidbits of lore that ties into its prececessor NieR and the games that spawned it - Drakengard. None of which I've played, but it was fun finding lore about it nonetheless. Granted, I had to read up about those stories on wiki to make more sense, but to each their own. And all those bits of lore could be found in archives scattered around the world, conversations with NPC's, side quests and even weapons which by upgrading revealed even more info.
Speaking of side quests, however, they could've used more polish as a lot of the felt just like your regular MMO fetch quests which are not the most fun to do. That being said, there's not too many of them, so the game doesn't lose its pacing too much. Unless you decide to grind some specific units for lore or items for upgrades. But that's all optional and is not required for the main game.

The game is also not difficult. You might have a bit of a struggle with finding the right materials and getting exp, especially if you're not really that familiar or accustomed to such games, but that should be the case only within the first playthrough as once you get to route B all of that becomes easy. But don't confuse that with busy work. View it as a sort of a power fantasy at that point.

Music in the game is excellent. And you can also listen to the tracks by just sitting down and relaxing within the game. But you need to play the game fully to unlock all of them for the jukebox. Personally I found myself going back to a specific zone more often than necessary just because I really enjoyed the soundtrack of that place.

Character and world design is perhaps a bit iffy, but considering the story and the world, the designs kind of make sense.

With all that said, I can only wholeheartedly recomment this game to anyone who has even the slightest interest in this genre of games. Though, not sure if it can be assigned to a single genre which is the beauty of it. Don't be afraid of playing more than once through the game. Enjoy it as the journey that it is.
