This game is pretty fun! I got about a quarter of the way in and it's a fast-paced blast - I definitely plan to finish the game completely. I played this on Linux using Proton 7.0.3 and it worked flawlessly, by the way. So if you're a Linux user, this game should work just fine. I also played using standard mouse and keyboard, so if you're looking to play with a controller: I would read some other reviews, because I'm hearing conflicting reports about Neodori's "Full Controller support."

All in all, well worth the price tag. It's always nice to support an indie developer too. :)

Wow, this is such a lazy cash grab of a product, that I don't even know where to start with this. This adds substantially less content than everything else, and everything that is included is pretty much just a reskin of blocks we already have in the vanilla game, save for maybe the Embrasure block, although even that block isn't that great thanks to Keen's new weapon recoil which forces your camera upward every time you shoot.

I go into more detail about everything in my 'Ranking Keen's DLC' guide, so I wasn't even planning on writing a storefront review here, but I just got to warn you all straight away. Don't give KSH your money for this garbage, because by doing so you're rewarding bad behaviour, which means they'll just keep releasing lazy DLC like this. Keen for the love of god make something substantial for once, because YOU'RE HURTING ME!

This game is pretty cool! On it's own there isn't a whole lot you can do other than build vehicles and buildings, however there are some great mods on the workshop which definitely enrich your gameplay experience by a LOT. It's similar to game like Minecraft or Gmod in that: Your gameplay experience is what you make of it. Want to build a huge fleet and have a massive battle with friends? Go ahead! Want to build a huge city? Do it! Space Engineers can offer a very rewarding experience to those that have an aptitude to think creatively.

That being said, despite Space Engineers being released almost 7 years ago: There still some glaring issues with this game, which I will be going into great detail about here. This review may have some hot takes but what I'm hoping for is that these points can serve as both a warning to potential buyers, and as constructive criticism to the developers. So with that out of the way, here are my biggest problems with Space Engineers:

1) Performance is GARBAGE: I hope you have a NASA computer, because if not - good luck running this game on anything other than low graphics settings and the default PCU (the amount of parts you can have in a world) value. In short; this game is pretty poorly optimised. I have a pretty damn good computer, and this baby nearly lights on fire every time I play, especially in world's with lots of ships or other parts. This game was released in 2013, and my fairly high-end PC can barely even handle it. That... is a problem. Especially considering that Space Engineers is voxel-based and is not exactly the most astonishing game graphically speaking. I'm no game development guru, but I believe that there's got to be a better way to optimise this game. Whether that means some tweaks in the code, or a complete overhaul of the VRAGE 2.0 Engine, I dunno.

tl;dr I can run ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FarCry 5 with absolutely no issues, but I can't run a 2013 indie title without my computer nearly lighting on fire.

2) Paid DLC's... up the ass: There are WAY too many DLC's being released. I don't know if sales are down or what but KSH has been pumping out DLC's like crazy since April 2019. There were five released bi-monthly last year and so far 1 released this year. I do own all of these DLC's and thankfully, most, if not all of the items included are purely cosmetic and are not pay-to-win. However, it has gotten to the point where the combined cost of all the DLC's (not including the deluxe edition) is as much as the game itself. This is ridiculous guys, especially considering that in the time I've owned the game since November 2018: there has only been one substantial update, that being the Frostbite Update. (BUT THERE WAS EVEN A PAID DLC FOR THAT!!).

I say substantial but the Frostbite update barely added anything, if I'm being completely honest. The community is getting pretty irritated with Keen's tactics. It does kinda feel like KSH cares more about making extra cash on barely decent cosmetic s### then actually making good updates. If you stick around the game long enough: you'll see what I mean. It gets a little annoying after a while.

3) The Scenarios are pretty lame: These are basically like mini-campaigns which have a small story tied to them. The problem is: they're mostly pretty poorly made, and are sometimes straight up broken. Even the Frostbite Scenario, which was a substantial upgrade from previous instalments; was broken, too long, too boring, and too confusing. To their credit though, I do appreciate the effort made. Tying in with this: the standard game has very little in terms of gameplay or objectives, hell you can barely call this a game in some regards. I mentioned before how the Steam Workshop pretty much saves this game, because if we didn't have that option where users can easily share builds, mods, and planets? This game would be dⱺgshit. The standard blocks and scenarios are fun for about an hour of novelty, but you will get extremely bored, extremely fast after that without an idea of something to build. Again: If it weren't for the community content, I wouldn't have spent more than a few hours playing.

But Keen... I am speaking directly to you now. Downloadable content off the Steam Workshop should NOT be the sole reason your game is great. Space Engineers is arguably a relative of Minecraft since they're both voxel-based sandbox games all about building, but you don't need mods and such with that game for it to be enjoyable for hundreds or thousands of hours. Minecraft is perfectly fun on it's own, especially since there was a time in my life where I played hundreds of hours on my own without the use of such. Look Keen: just focus on building upon and fixing the game instead of pumping out new DLC's every other month. That's all we're really asking for here.

Anyways, that's about the only major problems I have with the game without sounding like nitpicking. I will still recommend this game since I've definitely got my money's worth out of it after all the time I've played. This is a decent buy if you have a pretty big creative drive, a lot of time on your hands, and a great computer. If you are missing just one of those things however, then I would recommend you spend your money on something else. Sorry Keen but despite enjoying the game myself; there's undeniably a lot of major flaws which need fixing.

tl;dr 7/10 - Fairly fun with player created mods and a great concept for a game, but in some aspects; terrible execution.

Edit: Steam is glitched and won't let me post super long reviews, so I had to first submit a short review, then paste in what I actually said.
