1. What would you say is your elevator pitch for Shipwrecked 64, for those who haven't seen much of it yet?

I’d say it’s a game that knows it’s a game, and is constantly reinventing its own rules in a pursuit to scare you. You can almost never predict what could happen next and there are many branching paths.


2. What are some of the biggest inspirations for Shipwrecked 64 in terms of gameplay?

I was largely inspired by a bug from the game “The Under Presents”. There was an Easter egg in the game where you could step backwards through a poster and fall out of the map and into a tunnel. It was fascinating to me and I never had seen anything like it before.


3. And what are some of the biggest inspirations for S64 when it comes to the aesthetic?

In terms of aesthetics, many of the styles are based on both my dreams, liminal spaces, and the general vibe of N64 games!


4. What game(s) got you into horror?

FNAF is a big one, but the biggest was Duck Season.


5. Outside of Shipwrecked 64, what’s your favourite project that you’ve worked on?

PolarDread for sure! I’d never made a game like that before, but my god it was really fun to do.


6. What do you think was the weakest part of the original itch.io build? (and/or strongest part maybe)

The weakest part was the actual gameplay, sadly: the cutscenes were impressive, but it was balanced out by really shoddy gameplay.


7. What’s your favourite non-horror game, and why?

As mentioned above, The Under Presents! It was fantastic, really! Very creative game with lots of exploration and player communication.


8. What is your favourite N64 game?

100% Mario 64, it's the game that inspired this whole thing and not even because of its gameplay, but rather the look and feel.


9. If it’s not spoilery, what’s your favourite part of the Steam version so far?

Layer 3, that's all I'll say for now.


10. What’s your favourite aspect of Shipwrecked to work on?

Honestly? The ARG bits outside of the actual game. I get to be so incredibly creative with them and it's all VERY fun to do.


11. Have you heard of and/or checked out the works of Siactro? (IE Toree 3D, Super Kiwi 64, etc.)

I've played Super Kiwi, yes! It was fun!

[EDITOR'S NOTE: The reason for this question is that Siactro's ludography (particularly the Toree series) also taps into a surreal horror inspired by platformers of the same era--albeit with less of an onus on said horror than Shipwrecked 64. Also seconding Super Kiwi 64. - Melody]


12. Favourite horror media that isn’t a game?

The Monument Mythos is my favorite horror media of all time, nothing tops it for me.


13. Favourite horror level or scene in a game?

Honestly, not to give myself too much credit, but Shipwrecked's Layers 3 and 4.
