It's not even close enough for you to accidentally press any walk key a split second to reach it.
You have to consciously walk into it.
I get that lag can play some role in this but if you don't want to use it, don't get near it.

Very quick playstation suggestion: Put the portal at the activator's spawn around a corner, I've accidentally walked into it a few times, once due to lag on my end.
