ABOUT Axolotl Appreciation

The axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) salamander has the rare trait of retaining its larval features throughout its adult life. This condition, called neoteny, means it keeps its tadpole-like dorsal fin, which runs almost the length of its body, and its feathery external gills, which protrude from the back of its wide head.

We here love and appreciate the existance of axolotls. This group is to spread awareness of these amazing creatures and make them known to the world.

Almost exclusively aquatic in nature, Axolotls are a species of salamander that never fully mesomorph out of their larval state, thus retaining features like their gills. This means they’re capable of growing into an adult salamander and walking on land if they are absolutely pushed to their limits. This, combined with their fantastic regeneration ability, make Axolotls one impressive amphibian!

Axolotl Fact #1: Axolotls possess a fantastic superpower shared by many invertebrates, despite being a vertebrate themselves. Axolotls, you see, have exceptional regenerating abilities. Unlike some vertebrate animals like lizards who can only regenerate their tails, Axolotls can regenerate nearly any part of their body, including vital organs like their heart or even their spinal cord if they need to!
