Overdose
(Trad / Speed)

USA

Albums:
  • Two Wheels and Gone (2020)
Overdose consists of a few dudes who have been on the metal scene for quite a while, probably the most popular association being either their drummer and lead guitarist both playing in Mutilation Rites, or their frontman formerly having done vocals for Speedwolf over a decade ago. And much like the latter band, this one is killer as hell and bases their sound on obvious Motorhead worship. Playing fast with heavy bass and everything going full blast at once, their first full album is 40 minutes of motorcycles and street fights just like old school metal should be. Finding decent non-topic / region locked youtube links was a bit difficult, so be sure to give 'em a listen at their bandcamp page linked below.

Daedric Shryne
(Epic / Thrash-ish)

Germany

EPs:
  • Daedric Shryne (2024)

Now we've got the first EP from a new band that came out a couple weeks ago, and right out of the gate they've already got some dang fine stuff. Elder Scrolls nerds are probably already clicking play, but for everyone else these guys are worth a spin if you're into the Visigoth sorta swords 'n sorcery with more of a Skyrim flavor. The production quality is also worth noting, particularly for a debut. The fact they spend 3-4 minutes on the intro / outro of such a brief LP is a bit odd, but if you listen to the whole thing as a single 13 minute song (see second video) then it's quite a banger. Really looking forward to seeing how the band develops as they eventually get a first full album together.

M.S.W

(Sludge/Funeral Doom)

USA, Salem, Oregon

Albums:
  • Obliviosus (2022)

M.S.W is a solo-project from the US that plays a blend of Sludge and Funeral Doom.

Its pretty difficult to really put a label on the music released under that project because its very aggressive and direct at times, but constantly defaults back to a very slow and sombre sound that you find in Sludge and Funeral.

I think "Obliviosus" is the most accessible work from M.S.W because it has ambient parts and clean vocals strewn throughout the release, which should be a good starting point for most people who try out the music.

"Diversus Ambitibus" on the other hand is far more ambient in its approach and arguably the more laid-back listen. Its pretty good and a great compilation of songs, but I'd argue that someone who's primarily here for riffs or casual music would probably enjoy "Obliviosus" more.
"Musica Pro Lapsu" is even more minimalistic and almost an ambient album, a very calming release I grew to enjoy for how discreet it is.

A fascinating project I only recently discovered, please give it a try.

Tyranny
(Funeral Doom)

Finland, Järvenpää

Albums:
  • Tides of Awakening (2005)
  • Aeons in Tectonic Interment (2015)

---

Tyranny is the project that formed out of Wormphlegm, another Finnish Project I mentioned about a year ago in a Weekly here as well.

They're focusing on Funeral Doom that revolves heavily around setting up a certain atmosphere that continues to dominate each song. Tools they use to achieve this are the monotone repetition and long, almost howling vocals that support the few barren and static leads woven into each track. The tone and production are low and slightly fluzzy and really help to emphasize the dreadful atmosphere the band tries to create.

For me, Tyranny are unrivaled when it comes to creating a bleak and hopeless sound and Aeons in Tectonic Interment might be in my top 3 of favourite Funeral Doom albums released during the last 10 years, outperforming both Evoken and Skepticism's recent output.
