ABOUT Kemetism

Egyptian Neopaganism

A revival of ancient Egyptian religion and related expressions of religion in classical and late antiquity. A Kemetic is one who follows Kemetism.

The name Kemetic comes from ancient Egypt’s name for itself- Kemet, which is often translated as “Black Land” or “Black Hills”. It’s commonly believed that this refers to the black life giving silt that the Nile would deposit every year into Egypt’s fields.

There are various flavors of Kemeticism- some which rely solely upon ancient practices, and others that use virtually nothing from the past. But in the end, the main connecting point for the different sects is the focus on Netjer- the gods.

There are several main groups, each of which takes a different approach to its beliefs, ranging from eclectic to reconstructionist; however, all of these can be identified as belonging to three strains, including: reconstructed Kemetism (adopting a philological and scholarly approach), a syncretic approach, and a more novel synthesis tending toward monotheism, Kemetic Orthodoxy.

Followers of Kemetism generally worship a few gods (Maat, Bast, Anubis, Sekhmet or Thoth, among others), but recognize the existence of every god. This worship generally takes the form of prayer and setting up altars, but there are no set guidelines for worship. Altars can contain items such as candles, offerings, or statues.

The Ankh is a Kemetic symbol of eternal life in both antiquity and modern times.
