Act fast, there is still a way to get the original design (and an OT thought that somehow became longer than the message itself)
EDIT: AvrorA found an even better way to get the older version. See his comment near the bottom of the first page.

Hello everyone,

I am, just like a lot of you, not really happy with the new visuals. While I personally wouldn't fully blame Amanita (they're just being too nice and trying not to have their game associated with such symbolism), I simply don't feel the same when playing the "orange" version. Something just doesn't click. It feels... off. And I honestly wanted to give it a chance.

Originally posted by Amanita Design:
As a team of peace-minded creative people, we simply do not want any of our games and characters even remotely associated with racism or any other form of hate crime.

That being said, I have this game on multiple platforms (GOG, Humble Bundle library, Steam and a physical copy that was sold bundled with the soundtrack in the Czech Republic some time ago). For the record, I own multiple copies of every Amanita game.

I just wanted to give you a heads-up that, unlike Humble and Steam, GOG still has the original version available. Get it while you still can and enjoy the game in the way it was originally meant to be played.

Just by the way, to everyone calling us a bunch of... well, whatever for complaining:

I am glad you exist to balance the discussion out a bit. I just figured I could tell you something about my perspective, so you get a fuller picture. I do not represent everyone complaining here, so even though I'm going to make some generalisations, these might not always apply. I'm not going to bring up SJW, PC, censorship, democracy, artistic freedom and such buzzwords. These are repeated so much that they don't contribute anything meaningful anymore.

I am usually the one to defend developer decisions in such discussions, so I know what it's like to be surrounded by a bunch of complaining people who you can't make sense of initially. I remember discussing the new season of Doctor Who, for example. While I agree many of us take this too far, I think it's fair to voice our opinion and say we're not happy about this. Lying that we love everything is about as useful a feedback as saying: "You spineless bastards ruined the world."

I mean, it's not exactly minor when you change the color of your protagonist in a game that appears to be aesthetically based on him contrasting with, well, everything. There was a reason for choosing the colour they initially went with. These people are artists first. I have a hard time believing the choice wasn't important for their design. And as an almighty Czech speaker, I can tell you that on the somewhat vague scale of chuchel-ness, the black chuchel appears a lot more chuchel-y.

So... I just can't bring myself to like this version more, no matter how hard I try. And I don't like the idea that I would have to actively force myself to like something that lacks the original appeal to me (which by the way wasn't based on the alleged racial features at all), just in order to be viewed as a progressive and tolerant individual.

I mean, see how many disclaimers et cetera I had to use in the introductory paragraph to this pseudo-essay just out of sheer fear of being called intolerant, stupid and "trying to speak for others without understanding them".

What we're dealing with here is first world problems producing more first world problems. It's an exaggerated reaction to a problem that was exaggerated on its own. And I believe we all have more important things to do, I mean, it's only been a day or so. It's not like we're arguing about this for months or weeks.

I think most of us just kind of hope that if we show them we really liked the older version, they could possibly add an option to play the older version even after GOG gets the update. We're not entitled to anything, nor do we own the rights just because we paid a couple of dollars. But we are still human beings and we can still hope, if nothing else. Not everyone is lucky enough to get their hands on it before it's too late and a huge chunk of the magic, no matter how subjective that is, got lost for me – and I believe for many others, too.

My little brother is confused and doesn't want to play the new version, because he simply liked the old one better. You can't convince me a child does this out of hatred and political reasons.

He bought the plushie at "Hračkobraní" (a toy event) and he even got Chuchel painted on his face there. That's just to demonstrate that we really don't know about blackface. We deal with different kinds of racism in Czechia as we have different ethnic groups living here. I mean, our president actively supports the idea that Romani people are lazy parasites. Some politicians go even further and call them thieving lazy parasites and a security threat to our nation. Vietnamese people are often dismissed as a nation of shopkeepers. These are real issues that still exist, not some constructed imaginary ones. The idea of someone feeling offended by non-present symbolism is hard to understand for us and requires some mental gymnastics, so please don't jump to conclusions so fast.

So, I just don't want you to think we're all idiots complaining for the sake of complaining. It just doesn't feel right when someone takes something you liked and changes it all of a sudden. There's a reason I'm making backup copies now. It's because I care. Because I love the old design and don't feel the same way about the new one. And the complaints are made because we, or so I believe, subconsciously feel that if all it took to change it was a couple of clickbaity articles, we could get the old Chuchel back in some form if we tried hard enough.

Some of us are here just to complain, yes. But some of us are here because we believe we can still make a change.

Well said!
Also I think it would be nice if they actually asked us, the customers, before introducing such changes. Some kind of poll or an open discussion...

My thoughts exactly. I love Amanita Design, but I don't like that they changed the character after I bought it. There's something terribly wrong with that.

I'm American and I'm certainly aware of the history of blackface, but CHUCHEL, a dust-mite/hairball/scribble, wasn't that, and I'm sure the majority of American fans feel the same way. There has to be a threshold for reason and sensibility when being sensitive to others and this issue has gone way past that point.

Thanks for the tip about GOG, btw. I picked it up and the original artbook (because they changed that, too) and made backups.

ps. in GOG, click on the game, go to settings and turn off auto updates (it's on by default.)

Is there a chance to get physical copy of this game and play its offline?

Man just stop to defend Amanita! They clearly understood that many players wouldn't accept new design. But they decided that licking SJWs butt is more important, while normal people can go and ♥♥♥♥ themselves with their feelings. OK. Not a problem. Now Amanita can go and ♥♥♥♥ themselves with their games. If they wanted to please SJWs so much - now let SJWs buy and play their games. I will see how many of them will do it.

The problem is SJWs don't care. They just put their ♥♥♥♥ for a hype and went further for a next victim. And we, normal people, are left with this ♥♥♥♥.

Take any review, any walkthrough on youtube - did any player put his attention on a blackface? Did any player offend black people because of that??? The problem is fully imagined by SJWs and Amanita decided to betray common sense and to please their stupid moaning. ♥♥♥♥, I don't want to leave on this planet anymore. Now I understand why civilizations can't reach the stars. SJWs and their lovers ruined them more effectively than even Reapers...

PS. I even think sometimes that SJWs are racists in disguise to make normal people hostile to minorities because of their stupid moaning and claims...

Not sure. Newspaper stands used to sell them, but it's been a while since I've last seen one. Should I get you one if I come across it? I could send it to you, but I can't promise anything.

Eh, mate, I believe you kind of missed my point. I'm against this and even encourage people to backup their copies. I want the original to return as I personally find it superior for the reasons stated above. I don't like the new aesthetics and am not going to play the game in this form.

Still, Amanita is full of wonderful people, I've always loved their work and they're one of the few Czech teams that actually got successful abroad. Just because they got scared and felt uncomfortable having their design associated with blackface doesn't mean I should start hating them. I like the orange Chuchel less, I own a version that was not affected by this and I would love the black one to return for the new players to enjoy as well. That's it. Not everyone's stance has to be an extreme one.

Just because I'm not saying there's a SJW conspiracy against common sense and humanity doesn't mean I agree with the reasoning or the change. But not agreeing doesn't mean I have to go and burn their offices down, see?

I'm just trying not to jump to conclusions without trying to understand the other side first. I recommend you try to do the same, it saves one a lot of anger and frustration.

By simply losing your mind and shouting at everyone without properly articulating your reasoning, you'll end up fueling these SJWs of yours just as much as, according to you, Amanita does.

Wow... No, I'm not doing this. Not on Christmas.

I think you are ignoring my points and just purposefuly target my utterances without context to somehow convince yourself that I am against you, when we're really on the same side. I generally agree with you and if you refuse to accept that, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do. Sorry.

I am also sure they're going to adress this in some way sooner or later. You just can't expect them to do so right now. They probably want to be with their children and loved ones. That's a far more pleasant company than we are at the moment.

They're still human beings. And it's clear they never wanted any of this.

Already owned steam background seems to have kept the old design, too :

( I didn't know about Gog, but I already kept an old backup from Humble-Bundle to safety. :engineercat: Thanks for the advice, and this thread, Neprofik. )

That's great. Enjoy the original version and keep it for the future generations. I also had an old backup from Humble, but I must have accidentaly deleted it. The DRM-free version there was already updated to 2.0 when I found out about the change, so GOG was my last go-to place for a digital copy.

This is the first time I'm actually grateful GOG usually gets updates late.

Eh, mate, I believe you kind of missed my point.

Don't bother with him, he can't read nor think out of the box a little.
He's just acting the same as the people he wants to get rid off.
But you said it yourself, anyway. That's common sense after all =']

That's exactly why I was hinting him to think for a while but, hey.
Still, like you I don't particularly hate their move "for the sake of it" more than the way they did it (without asking and/or informing beforehand) and the fact that it's really selfish to not offer "at the very least" the option to change the color in-menu (at this point, that's just courtesy).

Mind you, I'm also a follower of Amanita since before they established their studio in 2003, and a big fan of Tomáš Dvořák's work. In the days where flash animations were just "not that much", Samorost felt like an "even so, this is so cool and nice!" surprise. They indeed have a way of doing things that sticks in the right places of your brain, most of the time anyway (I kind of hated them changing the Gnome's voice in Samorost 3... It's was so much adequate before. Welp).

Anyhow, glad to see someone articulate as you expressing himself accurately and more or less objectively. Even more, being from Czechia =]. And, it's not the debate here, but the lack of physical releases also sadly is the way things are -for the most part- in the PC world since a while now, and slowly but surely the Consoles one is getting there too. Hence this sense of insecurity in what you "buy". I wouldn't want that to happen to my numerous books. Like, one day you want to re-read something and *boom* the story got changed all of a sudden XD

Well, you get the point.

@Jaxir

You took the wrong door. The gremlins' party is the next one, on the far right of the corridor. You can't miss it~

I didn't try to attack you with my last answer. I got your position clearly. I see you're against orange chuchel too but I can't be with you in justifying those cowards from Amanita, responsible for that terrible decision. If they are so concerned about feelings why they didn't think about our feelings? Because our feelings are less important? Ok, thanks Amanita. I'm very glad!

At least they could warn us about changes instead throwing this politicaly correct version in our faces without any choice! They could say: sorry guys, SJWs eating us alive, we have no choice. But as I see - they support these moronic SJWs ideas. So, I'm out.

Oh, thanks for the tip! I completely forgot about the console. It's still kind of comforting to have the GoG installer, so I have no regrets.
