At 18 hours in, I feel like I've gotten a hang of this game enough to give a review. It's solidly in the "wish there was a Thumbs Middle option", mainly because while it's a great game, I would only recommend buying it on deep discount (you can often find this game for $3 on sale on other online retailers, like I did). Why? The DLC model, and there are a few different points to cover here.

1) Some of the DLC feels like it should have been in the base game. I'm particularly referring to stands, blinds, and tents. Stands and blinds come in one DLC and are exactly what they sound like - portable blinds, treestands, tripods, etc. that you can place anywhere on the map that you want (provided it has appropriate ground/trees). Without that DLC, you're limited to static stands and blinds found on the map, which... often suck and are weirdly placed (the ones in later DLC are generally better). Tents, meanwhile, are placeable outposts where you can rest and access your equipment storage. You can also fast travel to them. It's ridiculous that such major features are relegated to DLC. Also on this list are nightvision equipment, remote callers, ATVs, dogs, and the two extra hunting lodges.

2) There's a bit of pay-to-win going on. In the base game, the items that you can buy and equip cost in-game currency that you earn from kills, and many are locked behind having a certain level or certain amount of kills with their respective weapon type, meaning that you have to grind for them. DLC weapons, however, are simply given to you automatically when you buy the DLC. In fact, a lot of the best weapons in the game are DLC. So you can grind for -good- guns, or pay to be handed the -best- guns. This, in addition to all of the paid quality of life stuff that goes along with the previous point.

3) The base game maps kind of suck. With the base game, you're given two maps: Hirschfelden in Germany, and Layton Lake District in the Pacific Northwest USA. Both maps are extremely hilly and heavily forested, making it hard to see much. Oftentimes your prey will notice you and run long before you see it just because there happens to be a convenient hill in the way. It makes a pretty bad experience for new players. Meanwhile, I've just played a few hours on the new(ish) Emerald Coast map and it's -amazing-. You're introduced to wide open stretches of outback where you can easily make shots 200 meters away. You'll be slaughtering goats by the dozen. So some of the DLC maps are just plain easier, which makes it easier to get XP, which makes you level faster, which helps your get skills and perks faster.

Those DLC gripes aside, I do love this game. I hadn't played a hunting game since I was a kid, and when I saw the best modern hunting game for sale for just a few bucks, I decided why not. The maps are gorgeous, there's a huge variety of animals, it's a great time. That said, it's not a game for the impatient or easily frustrated.

Good game is a little hard at first but gets better the more you play.
