Failed to create D3D device?
This game worked great before, but now it says that and directs me to a link which i can't even copy somewhere on Steam.
What does this mean?

Glad I'm not the only one! I've got this on my laptop, and I've just got a basic graphics card, fully updated. I've tried changing the launch options(as described in the above link), tried uninstalling and reinstalling, all to no avail. If someone manages to figure it out, I'd appreciate it.

Try vefifying the game cache; right-click the game in your library, go to Properties - Local Files - Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

It will check to see if there are any errors and fix them automatically. =)

Tried it, still the same error. :(

Hmm, what graphics card does your laptop have? Are you sure it meets the minimum specifications?

I have the same problem and I could run the game fine before, but yesterday I tried it and it wouldn't work.

Same here. It was working fine for me Sunday, then I tried it yesterday and nothing. Didn't have a chance until today to actually try and suss out the problem, which led me here.

As for the card, it's an "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family". Can't quite seem to find the exact specs for it online, but as stated, it was running the game perfectly fine on Sunday.

What seems to be happening is for some reason the game is failing to recognize your screens resolution. Right click on the game in steam and choose properties. Under the general tab click Set Launch Options. Type in -w x -h y where x is your screen resolutions width and y is your screen resolutions height. Will work for other games with the same problem. If you need a visual reference here's the link to the video I got the fix from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26CQeyDjkYY

Bingo, thanks!

I've tried all of the solutions mentioned but to no avail... Yesterday it ran perfectly, but today it does nothing but throw this error. I've forced the resolution, the DirectX setting, verified the cache - nothing. Still can't "create D3D device" :/

EDIT: rebooted again and now it magically works... I don't even know.

Same problem, yesterday payday worked for me, so did every other game, then when I tried to open a few games it gave me the D3D error message. I did the solutions you guys gave but it didn't work. I checked my graphics card and all, even the link Steam gave me. Nothing. Any other solutions? I tried restarting Steam, maybe if I restart my computer it'll do something, but I doubt it.
