Tetrachroma 1.1.4 Update - New Ghost Piece Design

Today's update adds a new default ghost piece behavior along with some small changes. I think this new ghost piece design gives a noticeable improvement to game feel, especially in the CONSOLE and ARCADE modes, but if you'd prefer the old behavior there's an option for that as well!

With this update I think Tetrachroma will be entering a new phase of development with less frequent but larger updates. There aren't as many small issues to address, so I have more time to work on expanding and improving the game in larger ways. I'm excited! I am currently planning a fun update which I hope to have available within a week or two. I'm also going to spend more time promoting the game to grow the Tetrachroma community.

Changes

Hotfix 1.1.5: Fixed a positioning error of the I piece in the next / hold window in ARCADE mode.
Reworked the ghost piece display with a new default option for improved game feel. Previously the ghost piece option had "OFF" or "ON" settings. The new setting allows for "OFF", "ALWAYS ON", "FLASH ON SPAWN", or "APPEAR ON SPAWN" with a new default setting of "FLASH ON SPAWN". The old behavior is retained with the "ALWAYS ON" setting.

Developer's note: The old default behavior of the ghost piece was unusual in that it appeared as soon as the piece started to spawn. This was an intentional choice to allow the player to react immediately and move the piece as it is spawning with the game's spawn delay canceling feature. But, this 'always on' design gave no indication of the spawn delay duration which could make the controls feel slow in certain circumstances. The new default 'flash on spawn' design attempts to address this. Additionally the new 'appear on spawn' option allows for the more traditional ghost piece behavior for players that prefer it.
Added Max Gravity Ghost Piece option, defaults to "ON".

Developers note: This change ties into the previous change. Some players prefer to disable the ghost piece at max gravity (20G) because it is not as useful for gameplay at this gravity and can hurt the game feel by obscuring the rhythm of the spawn timing. I'm leaving the default to "ON" for now but may change this depending on community feedback.
Modified Level 12 announcement sound to make it more clear that the slower gravity at level 12 is intentional
Settings and Mode Selection menus now "wrap around"

Hard Drop Lock Off Bug

I tried this option in Controls Handling and disliked it a lot, changed it back to ON but it stays OFF in big mode (so far only mode found where it stays OFF),restarted the game to no avail.

Tetrachroma 1.1.3 Hotfix

Just a small update fixing a compatibility issue with display scaling and a bug. Thanks for the reports and support, and let me know if you run into any issues. Keep on stacking!

Changes

Changed the game process to be "DPI aware" which should fix compatibility issues with Windows display scale settings
Fixed a bug that caused piece motion after images to display above their correct position in high gravity speeds.

Tetrachroma 1.1.0 Update - New Control Options

Medium sized update adding some new control options along with some miscellaneous fixes. The biggest new feature is the ability to edit control handling on a per mode basis. Let me know in the Steam forums if you encounter any issues. Thanks for your continued feedback and support!

Hotfix 1.1.2: Corrected an issue preventing saving with non ASCII-characters in the path.
Hotfix 1.1.1: The update accidentally included a test pattern in place of Puzzle 1--ooops! this has been corrected! Sorry!

Added the ability to set mode-specific control handling overrides. Access this feature from the new "Mode-Specific Handling Screen" in the Controls options menu.
The soft drop lock setting has been expanded to support "OFF", "ON PRESS OR HOLD", or "ON PRESS". "ON PRESS" replicates the old setting of "ON" while "ON PRESS OR HOLD" is a new behavior meant to be more accurate to classic arcade stackers.
Added options to disable initial hold, initial movement, initial rotation from the controls handling screen.

Developers note: I expect this will be most useful for turning off these features for INSTANT mode: although initial rotation, movement, and hold systems do make sense in theory for INSTANT mode, they are unusual for this style of play. For now the default is on for every mode, but depending on community feedback I may turn these off by default for INSTANT.
Changed spawn positions of CONSOLE mode pieces to use right sided bias for better accuracy to classic inspiration.

Developers note: This change ensures classic players don't have to relearn tap counts if they choose to play with a style without DAS. Sorry about this unintentional inaccuracy! Thanks to all the players continuing to help me improve these classic themed modes.
Added text to unlock screen explaining where unlocks are selected
Adjusted volume and filtering for soft drop collision sound in INSTANT mode
Added more detailed error messages for the rare cases when saving or loading fails. This should help me narrow down system specific issues like file system permissions problems.

After a Super Amazing Wagon Adventure, I landed in the promised land...

...alas, instead of milk and honey, I admit it was a world of falling blocks, cascading colors, and by far the dopest puzzlin' vibes I've felt in while.

Enter TETRACHROMA (テトラクロマ).

It struck me immediately as a studied and passionately made iteration drawing from a few of my favorite TETRIS games.
For example (and I am by now means a TETRIS expert, so forgive me), the overall graphical style hits like TGM, it's beautiful white outline of stacked pieces accelerating my subconscious for high speed play. Rotating backgrounds, a strange but beautiful soundtrack, tons of modes, tons of detail in how blocks move and are animated when scoring points; again I get moments of TETRIS CD-i, NullpoMino, Shiromino, Apotris, and even TETR.IO. I'm sure there are even more influences...

What this amounts to nothing less than a great time tapping away at my keyboard. Plenty of modes to explored and find your threshold of difficulty, lots of customization in terms of block color, grid, music, you name it.

Now in terms of kick tables and rotation behaviour, again, I am not expert, but having spent quite a few hours with TGM and TETRIS: Effect, Tetris DS, and the above mentioned games; the game feels good. You can play quite fast and really feel that flow.

It also means a lot that the dev, sparsevector, is friendly on the discussion forums and seems quick and attentive to updates and patches. The game itself is pretty damn awesome right now and at a great price, in my opinion, too. However, the idea that there could be even more tweaking and additional content for this game would probably crank my enthusiasm from 10 to 11.

Overall, as a 'falling-block puzzler' fan, it was so, so, so, refreshing to have a sweet 'lil game like this kicking around on Steam in particular. For any puzzle lovers, TETRIS fanatics, Reversi warriors, and generally anyone who's lingering on the store page; I think this is a solid buy!

This is a tetris variant for tetris freaks. I'm not saying you need to be a freak to play it, but freaks will probably appreciate it more. The color switching has a fun learning curve. It'll feel impossible as you try to unlearn tetris habits and then you'll be setting off huge x10 line clears. Its amazing! There's a good variety of mode, highly specific options for freaks, and its got a pleasing retro aesthetic. Can't recommend it enough!

Genuinely the best falling block game I've played since Tetris itself first appeared. The gameplay mechanics are perfect, the various modes range between fun and fiendish, and the sound design is crunchy like autumn leaves. 10/10

How does Spawn Delay Cancel actually work?

I feel kinda dumb. No matter what I input or how quickly, no matter what the Spawn Delay Cancel option is set to, I can't play "faster" than spawn delay—it seems to ignore my inputs 100% of the time, I've never cancelled once. Is this filtered to only accept certain types of inputs or at certain times? Working on CONSOLE Marathon and would really love to speed up the early levels....
