DLC ashes of Elrant.
Are the main game saves needed or can you start from 0 the dlc?

On OP: We'll have a savegame ready from the main menu to enter the DLC directly.

Edit: Also removed a user now from Steam. No issues with him complaining about the Ending but my god there were some other postings... yeah, no thank you.

To answer OP's question, it appears that you will need most of the main game's story completed before accessing the DLC. The store page's description of the DLC says "Ashes of Elrant takes place right before the end of Chained Echoes. While you and your clan are preparing for the final fight, a new call for help reaches the Crimson Wings".

On top of that, the trailer shows cutscenes involving two optional late-game party members. I am not sure if they will be required to join the party to access the DLC, or if their stories will be optional sidequests that are only accessible if they joined the Crimson Wings, but it is definitely clear that you will need to at least unlock one of the final dungeons to access the content of Ashes of Elrant.

I unlocked all the characters, will they be playable in that save or would I have to go back for them?

The DLC will begin right before the endfight. So yes, you will be able to use all the characters.

Sweet, even though I think I'll start a new game for this one so that I may experience the game again with all the new features.
