Chained Echoes

Compared to Sea of Stars
I really got bored of SoS due to its combat: very simple mechanics, nothing impressive, pretty easy.

Is this game better in this?

I loved every moment of Sea of Stars, thought it was game of the year material personally, but yes Chained Echoes has much more options for combat and such.

Compared to SoS it's like night and day. (Chained Echoes has much better combat)

I really don't understand how I sometimes see people saying SoS is better than Chained Echoes / or even suggesting it's on par lol.

Story was not really that great, especially the ending.

Agreed. I did enjoy SoS, but then I was very unhappy with how it ended. Also the battle mechanics were pretty plain, nothing was really creative or original, and you ended up using the same moves over and over anyway.
But again, hated the ending. There was no closure at all.

I thought the SoS ending was great. Not sure why luvckay felt it wasn't closure. Sure seemed like closure to me. I won't say more for spoilers.

Well...in the end, the two guys just left. Basically we never stopped the "evil" that we were set out to do.

While in Chained Echoes, we never even see the actual villain who was the ultimate motivation for a lot of the game's events.

Which, I think, can be completed with a properly executed DLC. But even just comparing character development, Chained Echoes definitely executed them in depth.

I loved Chained Echoes. The combat system is engaging and deep, character builds are diverse and you can switch out unlocked abilities for specific difficult fights. Loved the progression system - each area rewards combat, but also exploration for unlocking abilities for your characters. I loved the plot. Each plot development answers questions, but also ends in a twist that made me want to see what happens next. Loved the world building as it unfolded. The character progression combines with the plot development to make great pacing. Some people hated the ending, but I thought it was bittersweet while allowing for a sequel. My biggest surprise concerning this game was going online to see that many people didn't like it, or thought it was just OK. Risk vs Reward - The high praise that people like me and others have for the game means that it's worth finding out if you're one of the people that really love it.

I know nothing about SOS but everyone says its insulting easy.

It has a very unique combat gameplay that i loved.

Chained Echoes has better character customisation. I'm not a fan of the battle gauge though, so turned that to easy within settings. Overall, enjoyed this game more.

Sea of Stars has horrible character customisation. You get three abilities and a finisher, which becomes extremely tedious after a while. The combo system is super cookie cutter and sometimes impossible to use. The stat distribution is gimmicky and doesn't really matter in the end, because stats stop showing... Story was lacklustre and very cliche.

I don't think you gave SoS enough credit, but I do think that its combat gets repetitive as soon as you realize two attacks can go on for as long as you can time your button presses.

Chained Echoes has deeper combat than SoS for sure and I thought it made every battle fun and challenging. This game is famous for making the worst parts of the best JRPGs better, and that includes Chrono Cross's "Field Color" battle system. Just to cut to the chase, Chained Echoes calls it the "Overdrive" system. Here's how it works: There is temperature gauge (of sorts) in the top-left of the screen with a symbol representing a type of action you can take in battle. Whenever you take an action, the gauge goes up. However, if you match the action's category to that symbol, or swap out a character, it goes down. If you can keep the green zone, you do double damage, take half damage, and skills cost half as much. If you end up in the red zone (the latter 10% of the gauge), you take double damage, but no other penalty. This makes every battle consequential.

You regain all HP and skill points at the end of battle. You can reliably run away from any battle you are unprepared to fight (except bosses). Leveling is also improved: All characters level up at the same time. You level up by completing story, side-quests, and secret milestones. The only "grinding" you do is to level-up the skills you unlock, as some of those skills and passive stats have multiple tiers.

Chained Echoes also has Metroidvania elements: There are also secrets throughout the overworld and within maps you passed through before that you can unlock after gaining new abilities or finishing sidequests.

While the game looks like Chrono Trigger, I would compare it Final Fantasy 7 or Chrono Cross in terms of content-density, as there is a butt-ton of high quality content to experience and discover.

Finished them both. Chained Echoes is way better. Sea of Stars is better only in graphics.
