souven1r is a song performed by Free Association in Side Order. It is played on floors 1F to 9F during "Sink the ∞-ball(s)!" missions.
Description
The song begins with a quiet, fast-paced melody, with very sparse bass and drum backings. As the song goes on, more instruments, predominantly treble ones, are added to the roster. The song has a glitchy sounding shift in tone, then the main synth starts building up to the main melody of the souvenir set. As the melody morphs into the motif, the instrument playing is replaced by the synth used in both later versions, which starts playing the motif in full. At the end of the song, the music winds down a little bit and returns to the sparse and jumpy tune as played in the beginning.
Etymology
Souvenir refers to an object or trinket considered to be a memento, ultimately derived from the French souvenir; "to remember". As this song plays in ∞-ball-escorting floors, the song's title is likely a nod to the Octo Expansion's own 8-ball stations, referring to the ball escort mission objective as a "souvenir" from the Deepsea Metro.
The replacement of the letter "i" in souvenir with the number "1" is a leetspeak trait, tying into the Memverse's themes of technology and internet culture. The full set of songs being souven1r, 2ouvenir and souv3nir, each song's title features a number to denote in which order the song may be encountered as Agent 8 ascends the Spire of Order.
