Anarchy Rainbow is a song performed by Deep Cut.

Description

Anarchy Rainbow is an energetic song drawing inspiration from Japanese odori and Brazilian samba music. The song starts with drum beats, followed by an instrumental intro. After the intro, Shiver sings the first verse of Anarchy Poisons (Bird Mix). This is followed by Big Man speaking with electronic notes playing. Frye then sings the second verse of Anarchy Poisons (Snake Mix), which is sung in a style resembling traditional Indian music. After Frye's verse, the whole band sings the chorus together, with brass notes and a whistle accompanying them. After this, a break featuring just the drum beat and the whistle plays. Shiver and Frye sing a few notes from the chorus, after which the track loops.

The brass in the chorus has the leitmotif of Calamari Inkantation; while the notes played are not the same, the intervals between the notes and the overall contour of the melody are very similar.

During Splatfests in Splatoon 3, Deep Cut performs this song in Splatsville. In the first half of a Splatfest, each member of the band stands atop their own float that moves around Splatsville as they sing and dance to their own version of Anarchy Poisons; in the second half, the three floats combine to form one big stage, where Deep Cut performs Anarchy Rainbow together. Shiver and Frye's versions of Anarchy Poisons each use their own verse of Anarchy Rainbow as well as a unique verse where the other's would be, while Big Man's version has a similar samba beat and trumpets. Anarchy Rainbow also plays in the train the player rides to Splatsville after completing the tutorial, with a filter to sound like it is being played from a speaker.

Lyrics

The booklet included with Splatune 3 gives the official lyrics for Anarchy Rainbow. The lyrics are nonsensical; the Japanese hiragana and katakana simply give the pronunciation.

Remixes and covers

Anarchy Rainbow (Live)

A live mix of Anarchy Rainbow debuted during the Deep Cut Concert at Nintendo Live 2022, consisting of a medley of Anarchy Rainbow and all three variants of Anarchy Poisons. This mix starts with the full version of Anarchy Rainbow before transitioning into Shiver's Anarchy Poisons (Bird Mix), Frye's Anarchy Poisons (Snake Mix), and Big Man's Anarchy Poisons (Boar Mix), in that order. Unlike the in-game version, Shiver and Frye harmonize with Big Man during Boar Mix. After that, Deep Cut closes the song together with one more chorus.

During the Splatoon 3 Live Concert at Nintendo Live 2024 TOKYO, a version of this is performed by Deep Cut together with Off the Hook, who contribute additional vocals. Marina also plays a keytar throughout the song. Additionally, the final chorus is replaced with simple chants instead of actual lyrics.

Anarchy Splatcast (Splatfest)

During Splatfests, the Anarchy Splatcast theme's intro is intact, but the main song is replaced with a stripped-back version of Anarchy Rainbow that lacks all vocals and most instruments. This usage of a simpler version of a Splatfest song echoes the Inkopolis News songs featured in broadcasts hosted by the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook during Splatfests in previous games, which were stripped-back instrumental versions of City of Color and Color Pulse, the songs performed live in the plaza area.

Anarchy Rainbow (Splatoween)

During the Zombie vs. Skeleton vs. Ghost and Wizard vs. Knight vs. Ninja Splatfests, a remixed version of the song is used that matches the Halloween theme of said Splatfest. This version includes organs and synthesizers, as well as a few new lines from Shiver and Frye. One of Frye's new lines resembles the words "trick or treat," which is a phrase commonly used while trick-or-treating during Halloween. The trio can also be heard laughing during the final verse. Some of the notes in the song are in major key.

Anarchy Rainbow (FrostyFest)

During the Friends vs. Family vs. Solo Splatfest, a version of Anarchy Rainbow with holiday-themed instrumentation, including sleigh bells, is heard. All members of Deep Cut also have some new lines near the end of the chorus.

Anarchy Rainbow (SpringFest)

During the Baby Chicks vs. Li'l Bunnies vs. Bear Cubs Splatfest, a rendition of Anarchy Rainbow plays which is arranged to sound like a tradition Irish step dance song while including xylophones and clap tracks. The song also plays in swing time unlike prior renditions of this song.

Anarchy Rainbow (Summer Nights)

During the Palace vs. Theme Park vs. Beach Splatfest, a mambo rendition of Anarchy Rainbow plays. It is notably the only version of Anarchy Rainbow to be played in a major key. This version adds some tropical-sounding instruments such as steel drums, trumpets, acoustic guitars, and a cuica. Near the end of the chorus, Shiver calls out to the audience. What she says sounds a lot like "みんなー!満喫してるー?" (minna! mankitsu shiteru?), meaning "Everyone! Are you having fun?"

Grand Festival version

During days 1 and 2 of the Past vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, an extended version of Anarchy Rainbow based on the Deep Cut Concert at Nintendo Live 2022 version was performed at the Grand Festival Grounds. This version includes all three variants of Anarchy Poisons. Deep Cut perform simple chants in place of the standard lyrics in the song's penultimate chorus section.

Rainbow Color Inkantation

Main article: Rainbow Color Inkantation

During the last 24 hours of Past vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, Rainbow Color Inkantation, a megamix of Anarchy Rainbow with Calamari Inkantation and Color Pulse, has been added to the song pool for Splatfest battles. Additionally, it was the only song that played during Tricolor Battles on the Grand Splatlands Bowl stage. If neither of the attacking teams secured the second Ultra Signal in such a battle, an instrumental song featuring the melody of Anarchy Rainbow played during the last minute of the battle.

Quotes

No need to twist our tentacles for us to do a deep dive on Deep Cut! It seems the trio will ride around on a float during Splatfests... and they've also written the Splatfest theme song "Anarchy Rainbow"! Check it out!

Trivia

  • Frye came up with the idea for Anarchy Rainbow while eating okonomiyaki, a type of savory pancake. It gave her the idea of "stacking" different types of music together.[3]
  • The demo for Anarchy Rainbow took six weeks to make. While they were working on the song, Shiver sent Big Man "back to the drawing board" seven times.[3] Big Man also refused to let Shiver or Frye provide vocals for the demo, doing them himself instead.
  • The idea of seasonal versions for the song was also Frye's idea, having gone to Big Man last minute to pitch the idea.[4]

Etymology

Anarchy refers to the chaotic nature of Splatsville and Splatoon 3 as a whole. Rainbow refers to how the song draws inspiration and has instruments from several different cultures and also refers to the fact that Splatsville is brightly lit up with signs, lanterns, and display screens, much like City of Color and Color Pulse.
