  • Holotype: OMNH-P 35642.
  • Paratypes: USNM 406763 (ex OMNH-P 4285) (1); OMNH-P 34238 (1), 35639 (1), 35641 (1), 35644 (1); CAS 234537-(ex OMNH-P 35643).

Type locality: Okinawa Prefecture, the Ryukyu Islands, Uehara, Iriomote-jima Island, 24.4325N, 123.8148E [1], 3–5 m depth.

Etymology: The specific epithet is combining the Latin nigra (= black), and membrana (= membrane), referring to the distinctive black pigment on the opercular membrane.
