Name

[edit]
  • Avalonnectes arturi Benson, Evans & Druckenmiller, 2012
Holotype: NHMUK 14550, the posterior portion of the skull, and a partial postcranial skeleton.
Type locality: Street, Somerset, UK (likely lowermost Hettangian).
Etymology: Species epithet after Arthur Cruickshank (1932–2011), who with M. A. Taylor initiated the restudy of British Lower Jurassic plesiosaurians in the 1990s, and also as a reference to the legendary King Arthur of British folklore.
