Comet’s modern ‘chunking’ technology powers client-side deduplication with no full re-uploads after the first backup. "My Comet Backup review"

    Posted 2023-12-18

    Pros: Easy to use.
    Can create multiple users.
    Client run in background.
Logs are easy to read and access.
    Overall good.

Cons: Can't back up when files in use.
Should have a download button rather then restore to location.

Overall: It's not bad to use and easy to recover files when i do, wish there was a quicker way to just download the file rather then just choosing the location to recover and it can be confusing.

    "Slow and Buggy Development "

    Posted 2023-12-18

Pros: Potential for a backup solution that works well for MSP
    Promise of VM backups
Potential for centralized backups and reporting

Cons: - Poor explanation of billing
    - Lack of functional software that allows for VSS failure workarounds
    - Non-existent customer support
    - Reporting is lackluster

Overall: Would not recommend this product. It has a steep learning curve and is buggy whether you are use the self-hosted server or their cloud hosted server.

    "Excellent and versatile backup software"

    Posted 2023-11-09

Pros: I have been using CometBackup since 2020 to provide a managed backup service for over 600 servers over S3. It is a reliable backup software yet simple to deploy and manage through a self-hosted web portal and at a very reasonable price.
I love the API with allowed me to implement some automation in provisioning new customers.
    New features are regularly implemented.

Cons: Although the product is very well documented and the team provides a 24/7 support, advanced support is in New Zealand and, when you work in France as i do, i means a 12hours wait in between questions/answers.
The licences credit is prepaid but i wish i could purchase more than 10k € at a time.

Overall: A reliable, full featured yet simple to deploy and manage backup solution at a very reasonable price too

"Great software by a great company!"

    Posted 2023-10-28

Pros: Comet's support team is fantastic I've only had to reach out a handful of teams and was blown away each time. The backup server is very easy to setup, use, and maintain - I've yet to have an outage caused by finicky updates or software bugs (knock on wood, lol). Comet backup gets frequent updates with both a "bleeding edge" and "stable" branch with clear and easy accessible changelogs to view changes and note any additional maintenance needed on my end. Documentation for the server and client is light years ahead of just about all other software I've used! I'm extremely happy Comet supports hosting everything yourself while also offering hosted options - usually when companies do this, the self-hosted option is scarcely supported or is feature-crippled. This has never been an issue for me with Comet; as a self-hosted user, I feel like Comet cares about me as much as their hosted customers.

Cons: UI can feel a little clunky at times; sometimes I need to go three or four windows deep when configuring backup jobs to get the scheduling setup well (that's mostly because I micromanage backup jobs, though. The average user probably won't run into this). I'm a little frustrated with how Comet handles laptops - my server manages roughly 20 clients, ranging from 24/7 desktops in businesses to sporadically-used residential laptops, and backup jobs fairly frequently get "stuck" because a laptop was closed while the job was running. There have been several updates to address these concerns, though.

Overall: I could not be happier with Comet and strongly recommend it to MSPs, internal IT teams, and even tech-savvy users looking for more control over their data backups. Comet has never let me down and has me as a customer for life!

    "Comet backup for an MSP"

    Posted 2023-10-28

Pros: Easy to use and deploy.
    Inexpensive.
Interfaces with multiple cloud storage providers and local storage option.
Ability to do bare metal backup.
Great support when I encounter issues.

Cons: I can't think of things I do not like with this product.

Overall: I would recommend Comet Backup for MSPs and individuals due to its ease of use and affordability. The technical support when issues arise is very good.

"Second to None for File Level Backup to Cloud"

    Edited 2023-10-27

    Pros: - Easy to Use.
    - Easy to Deploy with RMM/GPO.
    - Easy to Setup.
    - Quick Support Response.
    - Very customizable/brandable.
    - Cross Platform (Win/Mac/Linux/Synology).
    - Low Cost in Comparison to Other Vendors.
    - Consistent Development of the Server and Agent, and not just bug fixes, new community voted features are added every quarter.

Cons: - Various hiccups with backup jobs can require manual intervention.
    - Deduplication and/or Reindex operations can take some hours or even days to complete, even when the storage is on a RAID array.
    - Lowest cost option requires self hosting and bring your own storage.
    - There's add-on costs for many items like SQL Backups, Hyper-V/VMWare Backups, etc.. which can feel a little nickel and dimey.

Overall: Comet Backup has provided a way for our MSP to keep some costs low while offering a cloud backup solution for our clients critical workstations and servers. We generally bolt this on top of an on-prem solution to provide for risk mitigation for theft, fire, flood, electrical/physical damage. We self host this on a Linux VM in our office, and provide a Network Attached Storage device as the target for the backup storage. In general the software works great, and we really like using it. I also like that there is continued development, so new features are added, and bugs are quashed quarterly. Comet has lots of other options that we're not using today (like image backups, or backups of VMs, backups of SQL databases), but it's nice to know it supports it. If you're in the market for a self-hosted backup platform with lots of flexibility, consider Comet Backup for sure.

    "The best backup software vendor"

    Posted 2023-10-27

Pros: Comet was simple from day 1 for us. Up an running in a matter of minutes, and a decision made shortly after testing.

Cons: There is nothing I can think of right now that we do not like about Comet. It's an all-round excellent product.

Overall: Our experience with Comet Backup has been one of the best! We switched to it almost straight away, and their API that allows us to build the product into our own control panel was just the icing on the cake!

We have no plans to move elsewhere or even look around for different backup software.

We've moved our installation to different servers over time, and more recently switched back to self-hosted so we can house our own resellers.

The support we get couldn't be better either - fast responses, and very knowledgable!

A must have for every IT professional!

    "Inexpensive Backup tool for businesses"

    Posted 2022-11-08

Pros: Comet Backup has straightforward features and is easy to use.
Backup can be scheduled and it automatically activates.
Supported by Microsoft 365, MongoDB and various other servers.

Cons: The user interface is not very responsive in my case.

Overall: Overall, Comet Backup most inexpensive platform for business server backup. Its auto-scheduled backup feature works pretty well. We are using this with MongoDB to back up and it performs excellently. Highly recommend.

"Backup Software that has changed our company"

    Posted 2022-05-17

Pros: What struck us most when comparing to other solutions was the speed in which the backups took place and the same for the restore process. We compared it to several and Comet was by far the quickest and most efficient at handling this. The list of things we like is quite extensive and too much to list here but because of its efficiency, reliability, ease of use and simple to navigate interface we are upgrading all of our customers to the Comet platform

Cons: As this is a relatively new product on the market there was initially some frustration with a lack of features. However, this was in the early days and i am very happy with how the dev team are bringing on new functionality all the time.

Overall: Overall the product is excellent, works very well, its reliable and stable. Everything you need for a service such as this. The support team are great and very responsive to questions and feature requests. It's a developing software and i have no doubt that they will continue to develop the services available. We are now in the process of moving all of our customers to Comet!

    "Simple, Fast and Effective!"

    Posted 2022-04-16

Pros: Really very simple hiring and implementation. In a few minutes we already had our SelfHosted server in production with several clients connected. If you prefer, there is the possibility of acquiring a ready-made environment.
Support always functional, price is among the best on the market.

Cons: Perhaps if you are used to traditional solutions, you may have a slight difficulty in implementing it right away, but as there is a lot of material available and supporting documentation, everything quickly becomes clear.

Overall: After a few years using it, I see the tool mature mentally and make the experience more and more professional at an affordable cost.

"Modern solution for a modern problem"

    Posted 2022-04-13

Pros: Comet Backup offers a sleek, web-based admin console that allows for full management of backups. From versatile File & Folders, to Disk Image and Office 365 backups, Comet has become my one-stop shop for all backup services. They support all three operating systems with code sign abilities for Windows and Mac (which is important to my clients). Their support and staff team is patient and always helpful. Their documentation and API makes integration and custom solutions super easy to develop. Comet is continually growing and updating to match new backup needs.

Cons: For a while, Comet didn’t offer Office 365 backup, which was a bummer since many of my clients were asking for it. However, as of this year, Office 365 is available and fully integrated into the platform, which has been a huge help and boosted sales.

Overall: I am extremely satisfied with Comet Backup! They are an integral part of our company’s service and will continue to shape how we conduct business. Comet continues to improve their product capabilities, refine the UI/UX, and increase backup ease of use and accessibility. I will continue using Comet for the foreseeable future!

    "Designed for IT"

    Posted 2022-02-21

Pros: It is easy to implement. The only difficulty is setting up a server and understanding how it works. Then very easy.
It's also very reliable: I make my backups with Comet Backup.

Cons: Everything depends on a server: if it fails, the copies fail. But it allows setting up a spare server.

Overall: It is the best option to democratize prices and be able to offer a very powerful solution to small businesses. That's not to say it's not a good solution for large companies: it's great for those companies, too.

"Excellent backup software for those offering backup services"

    Posted 2022-02-21

Pros: Fast modern interface, quick and painless backup and restores, well documented, excellent deduplication, admin interface makes it easy to check for missed or errored backups needing attention, and updating the server and endpoints is quick and painless.

Cons: It would be nice if the client download was a single executable instead of a zip file.

Overall: It’s been an absolute pleasure to migrate from Ahsay to Comet Backup. The software pretty much “just works” and is much more affordable with better support.

"Definitely worth your time to take a look at"

    Posted 2022-02-21

Pros: The company is very responsive and accessible. With the only major bug I have seen slip through, they evaluated the reports and were candid in responding, offering an accurate assessment of the practicality of rolling the software version back pending a fix. For communication and being candid they really are a 10/10. The product works well and as described. If you take the time to understand the implementation of a particular feature, it will consistently deliver the feature as described. They use a two track development system with a fast track and a stable release track. It is something I have really come to appreciate when comparing to several other vendors of other types of software we work with. That said, even the fast track releases with the new features seem well tested before release. I have come to look at them mores as a request for comment on something that is very likely to be working as described but perhaps needs a little field testing to better understand a tweaked implementation or feature set enhancement prior to making its way to the stable release track. It is a rapidly advancing track, so caution would be prudent, but I think Comet do a much better job of internally testing new features before adding them to the fast track release than many others do. You are not likely to find yourself feeling like an alpha tester for a work in progress. I use them both and find they do a good job of the releases.

Cons: It is an evolving product and a growing company. They seem very focused on adding base functionality and features. From an end-user perspective this is great. If you are a managed services provider or service provider looking to white label for other resellers you may find it does not yet offer (at the time of this writing in Q1/2022) functionality you may consider necessary from a marketing standpoint or are used to having available in more mature products. The company is not at all unresponsive, does encourage suggestions and has added some functionality where it could find consensus; however, these parts of the evolution currently take a back seat to base functionality and adding features.

Overall: This review was provided in exchange for a 20 dollar gift card of an undisclosed type if published. The gift card was not a significant consideration in agreeing to respond. I don't usually take the time to write a review but think the people at Comet are very committed to what they do, are responsive beyond industry norms and deserve some recognition for that and for their successes so far at the ongoing development of very usable product.
