The AROS Research Operating System is an effort to implement an Open Source and portable operating system that is compatible with AmigaOS(TM). Originally, it was meant as a direct reimplementation, but already has features not existing in AmigaOS.

If you want to learn how to code an operating system that made the history, then this is the project for you. You won't find what you take for granted in nowadays operating systems (namely, memory protection and virtual memory) but you're in for great fun anyway.
