Here are my 4 tactics for a successful remote onboarding: This week, we welcomed a new person to the Flowboost team. Welcome Branislav Grobarčík 🤙 Branislav has a great track record in PPC and is used to remote work. But how do you go about onboarding? Let me share our onboarding process. 1. Onboarding call Schedule a 1-hour onboarding call. Keep it brief and walk through the basic steps of the onboarding process. Use the onboarding checklist as a guide during this call. 2. Onboarding checklist This checklist contains all the steps for successful onboarding: - contract and commercials - communication tools and setup - client work procedures - performance and feedback - knowledge bases access 3. Onboarding videos While the onboarding call provides essential information, it's helpful for the employee to explore company info in their own time. We've created a mini-series in Notion called "Welcome to Flowboost" containing 7 videos: - why clients choose us - how we use notion - how we communicate - how we work - how we analyse - how we test / scale - how we stay on top 4. Personal dashboard This serves as the employee's homepage. Build his dashboard (as a Notion page) before onboarding starts, including: - client pages - quick access links in Notion - weekly review section - 6 month roadmap P.S. We just crossed 100,000 users! Here's how we figured out marketing at Jam.dev - a play by play you can use for your own startup: First, we tried to figure out how users already found out about Jam In our signup email, we asked every new user how they heard about us, then we tracked their answers to see where users were coming from. For us, the #1 answer was word-of-mouth (still the case today!) Next we brainstormed all the crazy ideas we wanted to try. We chose to do this in a figjam file at 4 AM 😂 Maybe it was the lack of sleep, but we kept thinking to ourselves: What would a competitor do if they were trying to out-grow us? Then we added those ideas to our list With a mix of data and crazy ideas, we created a 4-column table: 1. Backlog 2. Experimenting 3. Early signals 4. Operationalize Marketing ideas would flow from 1 → 4 as we began testing them. This process helped us experiment with lots of marketing ideas & learn fast I hope you can use it too for your startup! If I've learned anything from the road to 100k users, it's that marketing is just a lot of trying new stuff and seeing what works. Marketing at Jam is now 3 core things: 1. Community - Bring builders together 2. Content - Share our learnings to help others 3. PLG - Focus on features that bring value to users And don't worry we still have some crazy ideas in the backlog 😄 Extra things that were helpful: Reading the book Traction to learn about all the different marketing channels Looking for ideas outside of tech – like seeing how tswift is marketing her Era's tour (giving a talk today at PLGTM on how our marketing strategy is driven by learnings from Taylor Swift later today!) Product vs. Business Quite often I see when it's about startups people speak about the product. But the product (no matter how good it is) is just one piece of the puzzle. If you want your startup to succeed, then you should pay attention not only to the product. Once you bring your product to the market, it's no longer about the product. It's about the business. You need to market whatever you do. You need to account for your profit and expenses. You need to have people supporting and assisting your customers and so on and so on and so on... So many things that are not related to the product in any way. And all these things are crucial for success. If there's no proper marketing who will know about the product? If there's no accounting how would you know whether you make any profit (or when you need to fundraise to avoid getting bankrupt)? If there are no people to speak with customers how do you know whether the customers actually like your product or maybe have some problems? So while, for example, getting product-market fit is important, it will do you nothing if you are not thinking in terms of business. If you are thinking and operating like a business, then even without having a perfect product-market fit you can still get some sales and get some data, which would allow you to better adapt your product to the market. But if there's no business, then even the perfect market fit would mean nothing. So start building a business, not the product. Focus on getting to the market fast to get real customer feedback. Use that feedback to adapt the product to the market. You will quickly if there's money in what you do or not. And if there's no money, then just change. A successful startup is a business, not a product.
