Ideal Climate
[change | change source]My ideal climate is a hot summer humid continental climate with hot, humid summers, and cold, slightly drier winters. It is located at 43°N. Rain is abundant year-round, but more common in spring and summer. Most summer rain comes from thunderstorms. Winters are cold but relatively short. On average, temperatures above 90°F degrees are recorded 25 times per summer and temperatures below 32°F degrees 98 times per winter. Lows fail to fall below 70°F 27 times per summer, and highs fail to reach freezing 21 times per winter on average. The wettest month on record was September 1999, with 19.75 inches of rain. The wettest year on record had 67.44" of rain and the driest year had 28.55".
Winter is cold with moderate snowfall, averaging 33.6 inches per winter. However, rain also occurs frequently, with each winter month averaging around 2 inches of winter rain. Snow rarely lasts more than a week or two at a time, and there are roughly 30 days of lying snow per season on average. Temperatures are highly variable, as most Januaries have highs above 60°F and lows below 10°F. A white Christmas (snow depth>T) is experienced in 24% of all winters. The first snow is December 2 on average and the last snow is March 18 on average. The most snow in a season was 79.2" and the least was 4.3". The snowiest month on record was January 2000, with 31.8 inches.
Spring features increasing temperatures and precipitation. March is prone to snowstorms, thunderstorms, and temperatures in the 80s F, sometimes only a couple of weeks apart. There are frequent thunderstorms in late spring, some of which are severe. On average, late spring features the greatest diurnal variation of the year. The average latest freeze is April 14 and the average latest frost is April 27. Late spring and early summer is usually the sunniest time of year.
Summer is generally hot and humid, with frequent thunder and rainstorms. Sometimes there is extreme heat; it hits 100°F once a year on average. However, the vast majority of days have highs between 80°F and 95°F and lows between 60°F and 75°F. There can be hurricanes in late summer. The strongest hurricane to hit Trobin was a category 4 at landfall and a category 1 by the time it hit Trobin.
Fall features decreasing temperatures and precipitation. Early fall can experience hurricanes. The first frost is October 14 on average, and the first freeze is usually around October 25. Snow sometimes occurs in November, but it rarely accumulates. Most of the time, however, fall has mild weather.

Fictional Climates
[change | change source]Cold Portland
[change | change source]Portland experiences a temperate climate with both oceanic and Mediterranean features. This climate is typified by warm, dry summers and cool, damp winters. Portland experiences a cool temperate climate, with snowfall and freezing temperatures happening periodically. Out of the three most populated cities within the Pacific Northwest region (Seattle, Vancouver and Portland, respectively) Cold Portland has the coldest average temperature, the highest number of sunshine hours, and the fewest inches of annual rainfall but the most inches of snowfall among the three cities. According to the Köppen climate classification, Portland falls near the border of the dry-summer mild temperate zone (Csb), also referred to as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, and the dry-summer continental zone (Dsb). Cold Portland has a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone between 7b and 8a.
Summers in Portland are mild to warm, dry, and sunny. The months of June, July, August and September account for only 4.49 inches (114 mm) of total rainfall – , just over 12% of the 36.03 in (915 mm) of precipitation that falls throughout the year. The warmest month is August, with an average high temperature of 71.1 °F (21.7 °C). Because of its inland location 80 miles (130 km) from the coast, as well as the protective nature of the Oregon Coast Range to its west, Portland summers are less susceptible to the moderating influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean. However, its high elevation generally keeps the summers from being too warm. Temperatures reach or exceed 80 °F (27 °C) 14 days per year and reach or exceed 90 °F (32 °C) 1.4 days per year. The highest temperature ever recorded was 97 °F (36 °C),[12] on July 30, 1965, as well as August 8 and 10, 1981.[13] The warmest recorded overnight low was 64 °F (18 °C) on July 28, 2009.[13] Triple digit temperatures have been recorded in all five months from May through September.
Spring and fall can bring unpredictable weather including warm fronts that send temperatures surging above 70 °F (21 °C), cold snaps that plunge the daytime temperatures into the 30s °F (-1– 4 °C), thunderstorms that roll off the Cascade Range and, although rare, occasional tornadoes. However, cool temperatures in the upper 40s to upper 50s °F (7−14 °C) are the norm – with occasionally lengthy stretches of cloudy or partly cloudy days beginning in mid fall and continuing into mid spring. Portland receives fewer inches of total precipitation per year than nearly every city east of the Mississippi River, however rain often falls as a light drizzle for several consecutive days at a time, contributing to a higher number (155) of days with measurable (≥0.01 in or 0.25 mm) precipitation annually. Temperatures have reached 80 °F (27 °C) as early as May 3 and as late as October 5, while 70 °F (21 °C) has been reached as early as April 1 and as late as October 21.
Winters in Portland are chilly to cold, overcast, and damp with temperatures bottoming out in the second half of December and early January. The coolest month is December with an average daily high of 35.6 °F (2.0 °C), although overnight lows usually remain near freezing. Approximately 55% of Portland's annual precipitation falls between November and February. Nighttime temperatures fall to or below the freezing mark 142 nights per year on average, but very rarely to or below 10 °F (−12 °C). There are only 16 days per year where the high temperature fails to rise to at least 32 °F (0.0 °C). The lowest temperature ever recorded was −13 °F (−25 °C),[12] on February 2, 1950[13] while the coldest daytime high temperature ever recorded was 4 °F (−16 °C) on December 30, 1968.[13] The average window for freezing temperatures to potentially occur is between October 5 and May 12, allowing a growing season of 150 days.[13]
Snowfall is variable, but the normal yearly accumulation is 28.2 inches (71.6 cm), which usually falls during only one or two dozen per year. Portland has one of the warmest and least snowy winters of any northern city in the United States, with over 10 percent of its winters receiving less than 3 inches (7.6 cm) of snow. The city of Portland avoids snow more frequently than its suburbs, due in part to its low elevation and urban heat island effect. The city has experienced a few major snow and ice storms in its past with extreme totals having reached 84.5 in (215 cm) at the airport in 1949–50 and 100.9 in (256 cm) at downtown in 1892–93.

Snowy paradise is a subarctic climate with wet winters (Dsc). It is located about 7,000 ft (2200 m) up a mountain at around 50°N. The environment consists of snow-capped mountains on all sides with a meadow in the valley. There are some scattered spruce trees, giving an open woodland feel to the nearby environment. Winters last from late October to late April with frequent snowfall interspersed with sunny periods. Snow depths regularly exceed 10 ft (3 m) during the wintertime, so all houses must be at least two stories or built on stilts. Spring is brief and lasts from early May to mid June. Most of the snow melts during this time. The latest subfreezing high on record occurred on June 19, but the average last day is June 1. Summer is from late June to mid August. During this time, the remainder of the snow melts, with the last patches usually disappearing sometime in July. Rivers and lakes thaw in late June usually not long after the snow melts. Frost is common in summer, happening five nights each in July and August on average, with freezes happening an average of twice a month. However, it can feel quite warm in the sun during the day, and temperatures reach 70°F/21°C an average of 11 times a year. There is usually a dusting of snow a couple times a summer, but it's almost always gone by noon. Fall comes fast, and is from late August to mid October. Snow becomes a bit more regular in September, and a snowpack usually gets reestablished before the end of October. The earliest subfreezing high on record was on September 4, but the average first subfreezing high is on September 28. November and December are the cloudiest time of year; this is when much of the snow depth growth takes place. Rain has never been recorded in this climate, but thunder happens an average of four times a year, usually in the form of thundersnow in November and December.
