Chacón was Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2011 in the cabinet led by Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.[1] She also served as Minister of Housing from 2007 through 2008.

With the landslide defeat of Zapatero in the November 2011 selections, Chacón resigned the Defense Minister's post to Pedro Morenés in December 2011.

She filed to be Spanish Socialist Workers' Party General Secretary. On 4 February 2012 she lost to Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba 487 to 465 votes [2] in the 38th congress of the party.

Chacón died on April 9, 2017 in Madrid from a rare form of heart disease, aged 46.
