At NEA, our sustainability mission is brought to life by the passionate #PeopleofNEA. Join us in the first of our four-part series, featuring #NEAofficers who impact the lives of every Singaporean! “Over my past 10 years at NEA, I’ve transitioned from international relations to industry relations, working to ensure a clean environment for Singaporeans and helping our companies compete globally. My division drives the transformation of the #EnvironmentalServices (ES) industry, which comprises the unsung heroes behind essential waste management, cleaning, and pest control services. Under the ES Industry Transformation Map, we conducted sandbox testing of innovative environmental solutions, and launched grants to spur automated and robotic technologies for the ES industry. Some of these solutions were showcased at international platforms, such as the biennial CleanEnviro Summit Singapore. At NEA, we’re not just about keeping Singapore clean. We’re building a sustainable future through innovation, collaboration, and unwavering dedication.” – Leidia, Senior Assistant Director, Environmental Technology and Industry Development Division #MSEFamily #SustainableSG #OurSustainabilityOurResilienceOurEveryday

#ICYMI at #CESG2024: World’s First Geostationary Satellite Instrument Focusing on Air Quality Observations of Atmospheric Aerosols and Gaseous Pollutants at the National Environment Agency (NEA) Innovation Pavilion! Launched in 2020, the Republic of Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research’s (NIER) Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) onboarded its GEO-KOMPSAT-2B satellite, an instrument that focuses on observations of atmospheric aerosols and gaseous pollutants. GEMS produces hourly daytime air quality measurements over Asia, where air pollution is a major concern due to rapid population growth and urbanisation. It enables scientists to study changes in atmospheric composition, to better understand the causes and effects of air pollution. A collaboration between NEA, NIER, and the National University of Singapore seeks to study the applications of GEMS data to address environmental and air quality issues. #ICYMI at #CESG2024: High-resolution Climate Futures for a Climate-resilient Singapore and Southeast Asia at the National Environment Agency (NEA) Innovation Pavilion! The Centre for Climate Research Singapore led the Third National Climate Change Study (V3) which provides the world’s highest resolution climate change projections for Singapore and the Southeast Asia region until the end of the century, based on the latest 6th Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Working off the IPCC AR6, V3 shows climate projections based on low, medium and high global emission scenarios. V3 provides a common scientific basis for all, including government agencies, academia and businesses, to prepare for a climate-resilient future. V3 findings are publicly available via the Data Visualisation Portal, which includes science and stakeholder reports, infographics, and the Climate Visualiser that allows users to explore how the climate in Singapore and Southeast Asia will change. Read on at go.gov.sg/v3 to learn more. #CESG #Environment #Sustainability

#ICYMI at #CESG2024: Southeast Asia’s First Semi-Automated Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Recycling Line and Novel Applications of Shockwave at the National Environment Agency (NEA) Innovation Pavilion! Funded by NEA's Closing the Waste Loop Funding Initiative, Singapore Polytechnic collaborated with Sembcorp Solar to develop and demonstrate Southeast Asia’s first semi-automated solar PV recycling pilot line, processing ~60 PV modules per day and can recover more than 90% of the panel’s weight. Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) also studied the application of shockwave fragmentation as a complementary method for the separation of laminated materials of both glass-backsheet and glass-glass solar PV panels. #ICYMI at #CESG2024: Transforming Printed Circuit Board Recycling: Recovery of User-Defined Precious Metals and Rare Earth Elements at the National Environment Agency (NEA) Innovation Pavilion! Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are typically recycled by shredding the whole PCB for recycling. As the elements are mixed, this method of shredding does not allow for selective recycling of high value and precious metals. Funded by NEA's Closing the Resource Loop Funding Initiative, Singapore CEA Alliance for Research in Circular Economy (SCARCE) seeks to develop an Artificial Intelligence assisted automatic line that disassembles and sorts electronic components from PCBs based on their elements. This allows selective recovery of metals which can yield higher recovery rates and purity, with simpler processes. Research will also be conducted on specific hydrometallurgy processes to recover precious and critical metals from waste PCBs. The development of more efficient and environmentally friendly recycling processes is expected to significantly improve the prospects of PCBs recycling and beyond.
