As digitisation puts newer destinations on the map, and more and more micro-entrepreneurs are directly connected to global travellers, the opportunities unlocked by tourism have multiplied exponentially. With relevant interventions, governments, civil society and private entities can truly uplift rural communities and offer them newer avenues of growth and economic upliftment. While the promise of a digital tourism platform makes economic opportunity accessible for everyone, the reality is that certain communities still face hurdles as access to digital skills and training continues to be inequitable. This is where capacity building projects help to bridge the gap. How does a nation whose tourism arrivals have rebounded so fast and at such scale since the pandemic deliver a higher yield from high-volume tourism? This is Thailand's conundrum, and it underpins the launch of a new range of visa measures, including the Destination Thailand Visa - sometimes referred to as the Digital Nomad Visa. Thailand's tourism promotion strategy over the past three years has been an unmatched success in ASEAN. There is a big "but" however... “So it leads Southeast Asia by a long way in terms of visitor arrivals. But the problem – and this is a big problem – is that although it’s got the numbers coming in, the average spend per visitor is relatively low.” Therefore "the incremental value of just having more and more people isn’t being felt."
