Technological advancement, 2. Sustainable Development, 3. the Rise of Asia. A Thriving Digital Future For All PM Lawrence Wong at the Launch of Smart Nation 2.0 Summary: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong launched Smart Nation 2.0 on October 1, 2024, outlining Singapore's next phase in its digital transformation journey. Building on the progress made over the past decade, Smart Nation 2.0 is focused on three key pillars: Growth, Community, and Trust. Key highlights: Growth: Singapore aims to push its AI capabilities further, fostering collaborations across industries and enhancing AI adoption in sectors like biomedical and materials science. The government will also work to ensure AI and technology adoption across small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and schools, encouraging both innovation and broad-based technical literacy. Community: Technology will be used responsibly to foster connections while minimizing its potential to cause harm. Measures include promoting cyber wellness and healthy screen habits, and creating safer online environments for children. Trust: To enhance trust, Singapore will introduce a Digital Infrastructure Act in 2025 to improve the resilience of digital systems, including mitigating risks like cooling system failures and cyberattacks. A new agency will also be formed to support victims of online harms, such as scams and cyberbullying, ensuring quicker recourse and more stringent online safety. Was just talking to someone about how easily someone is called an expert. So many experts in this piece. I think there’s only one among these who can speak with authority and that’s Tan Suee Chieh. He has been consistent in his opposition to the deal with clarity of thought and argument. I’m waiting for ‘experts’ who have rushed to support it without much thoughtful analysis now preparing to do Simone Biles standard backflip to support the government blocking the deal. While I’ve spoken out on several issues with the deal, the only area where I’ve really added something different was about the serious conflict of interest involving the Income Insurance chairman, and how that could taint the deal. From my experience, when there’s a serious conflict, there is almost always a problem with a transaction. Often, it’s not in the best interest of the company and its stakeholders- and in this case, it is indeed not, in it’s current form. https://lnkd.in/gCE_JgDb

The good boys and girls who kept well within limits, taking less risk, have wasted their time. I wonder if we think about long term consequences of such actions. This is not the first relaxation. REITs now will think regulators will ease rules if enough of them stretch or are at risk of breaching them. REITs were sold as relatively low risk investments but are deviating from these. I wonder how much we think about investors’ interests in such decisions.

Creating a TeachTok Guide I recently watched Minister of Education, Mr. Chan Chun Sing, at NUS FutureWork2.0: Dialogue on AI and the Workforce in Education. It was a fascinating discussion where he addressed the traditional education trilemma: balancing quality, speed, and affordability. He challenged us to rethink this long-standing issue in Education. Let’s look at this trilemma from another perspective. Mr. Tan Yap Kwang, the founding CE of SEAB introduced to me the 2-sigma problem, a research idea by the renowned educator Dr. Benjamin Bloom. Dr. Bloom suggested that while a skilled teacher can effectively teach an entire class, student performance improves by one grade with ample practice. However, with 1-on-1 tutoring, a student's performance can improve by an additional grade. This creates a total improvement of two grades—but the cost of such individual attention would be enormous, reinforcing the education trilemma. The challenge now is: Can ChatGPT provide this 1-on-1 tutoring? We believe it can, and we are experimenting with ChatGPT in teaching one of the most challenging subject to teach yet crucial subjects in today’s rapidly evolving world—Cambridge Global Perspectives. We’re making this process enjoyable for students by allowing them to embark on global challenges that explore critical global issues, such as those outlined in the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. So far, the results are promising. Minister Chan also issued a "TeachTok Challenge" to the 30,000 MOE teachers, encouraging them to create engaging TikToks to connect with students on their preferred platform. It's an exciting initiative, and I wanted to support our hardworking teachers. That’s why I developed "TeachTok Maestro" with the help of ChatGPT, which assists teachers in creating engaging TeachToks.
