Talks about hotels & travel. Values insight & accuracy.

In Singapore recently, I stayed at where else but the city's new kid on the block, Mercure Icon, which opened April 15. What's it like? Well, I was completely floored as I think the owner, Worldwide Hotels, is the latest player to reinvent the mid-tier hotel, a difficult task as the segment has little room for meaningful change. Yet they did it. Read why I think so in Hotels-Asia (link below). My stay made me think about how our industry loves to throw around jargons like "affordable luxury,” which are ambiguous and meaningless. There's no room for ambiguity with this hotel, which raises the bar for mid-market stays with perfect location, thoughtful design and smart rooms. I left feeling I had experienced the true luxury of affordability – not "affordable luxury." Last year, I interviewed Worldwide Hotels Group CEO Carolyn Choo on her $1 billion hotel shopping spree, which included the Mercure Icon – here's the link for that Hotel Investment Today article: https://lnkd.in/gB7HQ79P The challenge for her now is filling up the nearly 1,000-room hotel. The Mercure franchise is a wise move, as Worldwide Hotels needs Accor's global distribution and loyalty network to fill up those rooms. But judging by the buzz at the hotel during my stay, this hotel will be a “hit” – pardon the jargon :) https://lnkd.in/gbvepExu #midmarkethotels #singaporehotels #newhotelopenings

Embracing a pivotal call to join the family business in 2002, Carolyn's strategic acumen and banking background proved instrumental in navigating challenges, including the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Since assuming leadership, Carolyn has spearheaded ambitious projects, consolidating hotel brands, expanding globally, and pioneering innovative properties like Hotel Mi Rochor and Mercure Icon Singapore City Centre. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽'𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 After emerging stronger through the pandemic with over S$1.5 billion in local and overseas expansions, we marked our 30th Anniversary on 15 April 2024 with a dinner celebration by our Chairman, Mr Choo Chong Ngen; CEO, Ms Carolyn Choo, and nearly 300 guests at Novotel Singapore on Kitchener. Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry graced the event as the Guest of Honour. Showcasing the remarkable growth of Worldwide Hotels Group, we added 3 hotels with over 2,000 rooms to the local hotel inventory over the last 6 months. We opened the 543-room Novotel Singapore on Kitchener last November after the single largest hotel asset deal in the city-state and the second largest in Asia Pacific in 2023 at more than S$500 million. This was followed by our second property under our Hotel Mi brand, the 530-key Hotel Mi Rochor in December 2023 and the 989-key Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre, the Group’s new flagship hotel under our ICON Hotel brand and the largest Mercure Hotel in the world, which opened on 15 April 2024. Worldwide Hotels Group has also added 3 overseas hotel assets with the acquisition of the 177-room Oakwood Studios Sukhumvit Bangkok in December 2022 for more than S$36 million and the 472-room dual hotel, the Novotel and Ibis Melbourne Central Hotel in Australia for over S$151 million. The 30th Anniversary is also a celebration with our staff. We managed to retain all staff during the challenges posed to the hotel industry by the pandemic. As part of this jubilant occasion, the Worldwide Hotels-Choo Chong Ngen Foundation donated S$2 million to Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and S$300,000 to School of the Arts Singapore. These donations underline the Group’s and our Chairman’s commitment to education and the belief that financial constraints should not bar talented individuals from pursuing their educational aspirations. From our humble beginnings with the first Hotel 81 in 1994, we have become Singapore's the largest tourist-class hotel group, owning and managing 41 hotels and over 8,600 rooms under 7 homegrown brands - ICON Hotel, Hotel Boss, Hotel Mi, V Hotel, Value Hotel, Venue Hotel and Hotel 81. We have strategically pursued expansion and investment opportunities in key cities across Australia, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. As a result, Worldwide Hotels Group currently boasts a global portfolio of 52 hotels, encompassing 11,200 rooms. As we look to the future, Worldwide Hotels Group remains committed to the mission to continuously improve to create meaningful value and lasting relationships with our guests and partners and delivering our brand promise – Hospitality that matters, Stay better. #WorldwideHotels #DiscoverWorldwide
