About us

World Scientific Publishing Company was established in 1981 with only five employees in a tiny office. Today, the company employs more than 200 staff at its headquarters in Singapore, and has offices in New Jersey, London, Hong Kong, Taipei, Chennai, Beijing and Shanghai. In less than three decades, it has established itself as one of the leading scientific publishers in the world, and the largest international scientific publisher in the Asia-Pacific region. Annually, World Scientific publishes about 500 titles a year and 120 journals in various fields. Many of its books are recommended texts adopted by renowned institutions such as Harvard University, California Institute of Technology and Princeton University. Among the company's notable successes was its being awarded the exclusive rights in 1991 by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm to publish (in English) the entire series of Nobel lectures from 1971 to 1990 and to distribute them worldwide. Subsequently, World Scientific again obtained the rights to publish the complete series of Nobel lectures delivered from 1901 to 2000. In 1995, World Scientific co-founded the London-based Imperial College Press with London University's Imperial College. The Press publishes mainly in the fields in which Imperial College itself is particularly well-known, such as Engineering, Medicine, Information Technology, Environmental Technology, and Management Sciences. Imperial College Press has published about 400 books and 8 journals to date.

The authors investigate effective tunnel support strategies under significant ground pressure. Large-span tunnel excavation in squeezing rock conditions demands robust support structures capable of withstanding substantial pressures. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲? 1. 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: The study underscores the necessity of coordinating deformations between outer and inner support layers and the surrounding rock. Reserved deformations play a critical role in managing overall tunnel stability and support efficacy during excavation. 2. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The article validates theoretical models with empirical data from the Lianchengshan Tunnel. It demonstrates how double-layer support technology effectively reduces deformation and enhances stability compared to single-layer supports. 3. 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Parametric studies highlight the impact of outer and inner reserved deformations on tunnel stability. Larger outer reserved deformations result in decreased final deformations in surrounding rock and lower stresses on inner supports. 4. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: The study concludes by recommending practical approaches for designing multi-layer composite supports in tunnels. It emphasizes the elastoplastic behavior of support systems and proposes analytical solutions to predict and manage deformation trends during excavation. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gXAbcRC8 Contributors: Zishun LIU, Tiejun Wang, Huajian Gao, Tian Jian Lu, Zhigang Suo, Markus J. • The physical sciences and mathematics are extraordinarily useful in explaining the material world. People and society are constrained by physical reality, but we are often unclear on what constraints are absolute, which may be relative, and those that are simply a matter of taste. This book authored by Alexander Scheeline (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA) explains how limitations in the movement and perception of information constrain human behavior, cognition, interaction, and perspective. How fast can we learn? How much? Why are habits and biases unavoidable? Why is the common statement "any nation that can land people on the moon surely can ..." frequently wrong? Using equations and physical models, 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙬𝙞𝙙𝙩𝙝 describes constraints which, in part, explain political, economic, religious, and personal frictions. Aspects considered include: how much information can one human absorb in a lifetime? How far does a process of perturbation propagate? How do specialization or generalization, critical thinking or belief, influence what people accomplish? Throughout, equations are used to compactly express ideas, illustrating why mathematical economy of expression accelerates communication and deeper understanding. The critical impacts of uncertainty, fluctuations, or noise, and their implications for law and society, are emphasized. • The main task of the initial period of studying physics is inculcating the interest and enthusiasm of children in this subject. The root cause of all interest is surprise, and for children there is almost nothing more surprising than a new and unusual toy. There is a whole class of toys with unusual mechanisms, behaviour, or way of interacting with them. Having explained to the child the not quite ordinary, and often paradoxical, properties of such toys, we can gradually instil in him an interest in physics as one of the most important sciences about the nature of the surrounding world. The main purpose of the book is to arouse interest in the study of physics with the help of toys that everyone has loved since childhood. The book authored by 𝐈𝐠𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐚 (Russian Research Center "Kurchatov Institute") contains descriptions of the toys in which, with the help of explanations of the devices and principles of operation, the basic physical laws are revealed, together with perspectives of phenomena and patterns, practical significance, as well as historical information. The individual descriptions contain the minimum necessary mathematical calculations as well as information of environmental, statistical, and household orientations. All toys are systematized according to 4 chapters: 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐋𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬, 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲, and 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬. To a large extent, self-production of simple scientific toys can increase interest and enthusiasm in the process of teaching physics. To this end, the fifth chapter provides step-by-step instructions for making 14 such homemade toys from the most affordable materials using the simplest tools. The participation of teachers or parents in the process of making these toys by young children will undoubtedly provide positive emotions and establish trusting relationships. • We are very excited to present 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒈𝒖𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑽𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑹𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝑭𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒑 𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒅, featured in the recent edition of the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬 (Volume 16, Issue 05). 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲? 1. 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The study found that when considering vertical vibration acceleration alone, the maximum shear strain in the fastener clip remains relatively unchanged, but the maximum principal strain increases significantly. 2. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Under combined vertical and lateral acceleration, both maximum shear and principal strains increase significantly, with their locations shifting to the heel of the small arc. This highlights the need to comprehensively consider both vertical and lateral inertial loads when analyzing stress fields in resonant conditions of fastener clips. 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝: The study proposes a method to predict the fatigue life under resonance conditions using an equivalent static load approach. This method equates the high-frequency resonance load to a low-frequency additional preload, validated through stress field consistency and multiaxial fatigue criteria. 4. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: Fatigue tests under different loading conditions (non-resonant vs. resonant) reveal distinct fracture locations and significantly reduced fatigue life under resonance conditions. Specifically, under resonance, the fracture location shifts to the heel of the small arc, and the fatigue life decreases by approximately 77.8% compared to non-resonant conditions. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g_YwgxUm 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: Zishun LIU, Tiejun Wang, Huajian Gao, Tian Jian Lu, Zhigang Suo, Markus J.
