𝐀 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬.   Last week, we were honoured to be joined by Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State, Ministry of Health, as we celebrated our Nurses’ Day.   Themed ‘Spark Transformation Through Kindness’, our nurses embarked on a month-long journey of giving and volunteering – from socks donation, to spending time with underprivileged children, and raising funds for charity – our nurses truly led the way in showcasing kindness through their actions.   The celebrations featured energetic and emotional performances put together by our nurses, meals and freebies for all nurses, as well as a traditional kueh spread – contributed by our CEO.   To our nurses – no words can fully capture the gratitude we have towards you. Your hard-and heart-work will continue to be the light that guides future generations of nurses.   “What can you do today, that will pave the way for the nurses of tomorrow?”

As TTSH turns 180, our staff started a movement – Make 180 Count – where they pledge to do something good for our patients or fellow colleagues. It can be any activity with great social impact for our hospital and the communities we serve. We aim to achieve 180 good causes together as a hospital this year. Take a look at some of the causes that our staff have pledged! No effort is too small. #TTSH180 #HealthforGenerations #FacesOfTTSH

In 1844, our hospital’s story began with our founding father Mr Tan Tock Seng. Today, 180 years later, we enter a new chapter – alongside an army of over 10,000. Last Friday, we were joined by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as we celebrated our humble beginnings and looked forward to our role in tomorrow’s healthcare. We launched the Health For Generations Fund, which aims to raise $18 million over the next five years to support our developments in key areas such as innovation, preventive healthcare and capacity advancement. The highlight of the night featured a musical play ‘Where Our Heart Beats’, put together by award-winning actress and producer, Tan Kheng Hua. The play captured the stories of our staff and patients who have come through our hospital doors, past and present. The cast, consisting of local actors and TTSH staff, received a standing ovation for their portrayal of our true stories, as told by our colleagues. 34 staff and partners received our annual Staff Excellence Awards. Our hospital’s Total Workplace Safety & Health Council received the coveted Culture Transformation Award, and this year’s Milestone Awards went to our Integrated Diabetes Mellitus Care Collaborative team, and the Specialised Unit for Palliative Care team. It was an evening filled with smiles, tears, and immense hope for what lies ahead – as we march forward to deliver #HealthForGenerations

𝐀 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫, 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫. We are proud of Dr Chan Ee Yuee, Deputy Director of Nursing, and Heads of the TTSH Nursing Implementation, Translation and Research Office (NITRO) - who was conferred the President’s Award for Nurses (PAN) earlier today. A champion for nursing research, Dr Chan’s work in evidence-based nursing and innovation projects have been influential to patient care within TTSH, in Singapore, and beyond. Over the last decade, she led a groundbreaking research to better understand the plight of caregivers in Singapore, Project Carer Matters. Understanding the plight of caregivers, especially during a challenging pandemic, the programme provided valuable support to family caregivers struggling to manage the care needs of their loved ones at home. Project Carer Matters has since benefitted more than 700 caregivers, and will be further expanding to reach even more people. Her ‘heart’work, passion and dedication to the nursing profession has been unmatched. Join us in congratulating Dr Chan for this inspiring achievement. Dr Chan is TTSH’s fourth consecutive recipient of this prestigious recognition. The PAN is the highest accolade for the nursing profession in Singapore. A huge congratulations as well to the other recipients from the National Healthcare Group Family - Ms Doris Koh Sok Hian (Assistant Director of Nursing, Institute of Mental Health) and Dr Tan Hongyun (Assistant Director of Nursing, Woodlands Health).

𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞, 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮? Calm music, soothing scents, a loving touch - we first introduced Namaste Care in our dementia care wards in 2015, with nurses delivering the multisensory intervention to patients. In the years since, we've taught the concept and process to allied health colleagues, doctors, volunteers, and caregivers both within our hospital and in partner organisations. The initiative has also expanded to include cognitive and social engagement activities, tailored to the patients' own history and preferences. The time spent has paid off - patients both with and without dementia are calmer and more receptive to routine nursing care, and our teams and caregivers feel more connected to the patients they care for. Dr Noorhazlina Bte Ali, Senior Consultant at TTSH's Department for Geriatric Medicine, explains that the care also keeps going, "We do Namaste Care on a regular basis in the ward, and many caregivers continue that same timing and routine when patients go home, giving them a sense of comfort, knowing what to expect." It's our way of bringing more mindful, personalised care to the people we serve, building health for generations, #TodayForTomorrow.

Our Patient Service Associates (PSA) are pivotal in the service delivery of our patients. But aside from mastering their administrative roles, they want to do more. For the past decade, through our PSA Framework Job Design & Career Development Workgroup, our PSAs have been equipped with the tools and support required to upskill themselves and transform their roles to include patient-centric medical skills. What started as an institution-led journey ten years ago has now been expanded nationally. Read the article to learn more about how we the framework can benefit our service frontliners.

It is never too late to take the leap of faith and follow your heart. This is what Operating Theatre Technician Tay Lye Huat did when he turned 50. His switch from the manufacturing industry to healthcare was a drastic one, yet not unfamiliar since he was a medic during National Service, and is also a proud dad of a nurse. Despite the change of work location and scope, Lye Huat still puts some of his old trade practice into good use; he makes sure there are no loose or missing bolts and nuts in his workplace. Safety always comes first to Lye Huat, including ensuring the theatre is always well equipped with the right tools before any surgery. Hear from Lye Huat on how he made an inspiring shift into healthcare to become an Operating Theatre Technician.
