When a psychology major becomes a tree whisperer, the result is a landscape where trees and humans flourish together. SJ’s very own tree surgeon, Wen Ping T. is a professional who doesn’t just care for trees but speaks their language. And yes, she conducts health checks for trees too. For almost a decade, Wen Ping has been on an incredible journey, balancing her deep-rooted passion for nature with her sharp landscape expertise. From conducting health assessments, pruning, planting, and removal of trees to crafting sustainable landscape designs, every day is an adventure in the great outdoors. Wen Ping isn’t just an arborist (a specialist in the care and maintenance of trees); she’s a guardian of green spaces, ensuring that every tree stands tall and every landscape bloom with life. Her work isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating environments where nature and humanity coexist in harmony. With a psychology background, a diploma in horticulture, and certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, Wen Ping’s role is as unique as the trees she cares for. Whether she’s using tree tilt sensors to boost productivity or fostering innovation at military sites, her dedication to greenery knows no bounds. #PeopleofSJ

Are green buildings truly commanding higher rents? The debate continues, and Praveen Hassan Chandrashekar, Director of SJ’s Sustainability & Resilience Office sheds light on the complex factors at play. While some claim up to 30% higher rents, Praveen highlights that location and access to public transport are still the primary drivers. However, as the push for decarbonisation grows, so does the demand for sustainable spaces. As we continue to navigate the balance between sustainability and economic value, it's clear that the future of real estate lies in green, but the true premium is in the details. #sustainability

1.5mm annual sea level rise doesn’t sound like much at first. But by 2050, that curve will steepen, and coastal cities like Singapore, must urgently adapt. Are our urban areas prepared for the stark realities of rising tides and changing climates? James Lam, Executive Director in SJ’s Coastal Engineering & Management team shared in a plenary at this year’s Singapore International Water Week on adaptive planning approaches to coastal and flood management. He emphasised the urgency of confronting these challenges head-on, highlighting that the projections from the IPCC indicate a potential sea level rise of nearly a metre by the end of the century. “If we’re all honest to ourselves today, we should not be looking at the most optimistic (scenario). If we look at the more pessimistic emissions scenarios, then we’re talking about at least close to a metre rise by 2100s. By 2070, we’re looking at half a metre of sea level rise,” said James. This is not just a distant threat but a pressing issue that demands immediate and strategic action. Adaptation isn't just an option; it's a necessity. Specifically in Singapore, SJ has been working with partners such as PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, on critical site-specific studies for climate change adaptation measures at the northwest coastal reservoirs and an engineering study for climate change adaptation planning for Jurong Island with Jacobs for JTC Corporation. These projects are vital to ensuring that Singapore’s coastal areas are resilient and prepared for the future.

What is it really like to be on the frontlines of a country’s border security? Follow us around Singapore’s Woodlands Checkpoint, one of the busiest land crossings in the world with over 400,000 travellers passing through daily. From early morning briefings to night patrols, a security team of over 500 auxiliary police officers and security officers from AETOS Holdings Pte Ltd, an SJ company, safeguards the nation's borders around the clock. Whether it is performing vehicle checks, surveillance, or handling emergencies like extinguishing car fires and detecting illegal contraband, their vigilance and bravery is tested at every moment. “The engineering practice in the built environment has given me the privilege to make a real impact on people's lives. It has instilled in me courage and collaborative leadership, focusing on safety and sustainable outcomes through the practical application of scientific principles and advanced technology.” - Aaron KK Foong, Managing Director of KTP Consultants Pte Ltd, an SJ company, and Executive Director of Civil, Structure, and Construction Engineering (Asia), Buildings Cities at SJ. We’re proud to announce that Aaron has received the Design and Engineering Safety Award (DESA) from Singapore’s Building & Construction Authority for the seventh time, for two projects - Rivière and Surbana Jurong Campus. Launched in 2008, DESA recognises the Qualified Person for Structural Works (QP[ST]) and project teams for ingenious design processes that ensure safety in local engineering projects. Aaron’s innovative approach at Rivière, a residential development along Singapore River, tackled complex geological challenges and space constraints with circular earth retaining structures that eliminated the need for struts. This ensured fast, watertight construction and streamlined the entire process. His integration of advanced computer modeling with physical testing for PPVC wall structures further guarantees the safety and effectiveness of the tall buildings at Rivière. At Surbana Jurong Campus, Aaron seamlessly integrated engineering research and advanced technology with intricate cantilevered structures and sophisticated linkage solutions. Eight-storey high steel “A” frame structures were introduced to connect all ten blocks, creating a spacious and interconnected environment. Join us in celebrating Aaron’s outstanding contributions to engineering innovation and safety in the built environment! Image of Rivière courtesy of Frasers Property.

Did you know Singapore’s Punggol district used to be called Kampung Punggol, a settlement known for fishing, pig farming, seafood restaurants, and water sports? It is sometimes referred to as “Ponggol”, which means “to toss sticks into the branches of fruit trees to make the fruits fall” in Malay. Now, Punggol is a bustling, modern town that still honours its roots through thoughtful urban planning. Over the last 20 years, together with Singapore’s Housing & Development Board (HDB), SJ has planned and designed more than 30,000 public residential units across 30 precincts in Punggol, including the iconic Punggol Waterway park completed in 2011. SJ has played an instrumental role in shaping Singapore’s urban, industrial, and infrastructure landscape for more than six decades. Punggol Town is just one example of the many HDB projects we have undertaken, showcasing our commitment to enhancing urban living across Singapore. And we’re not stopping there — together with our global collective of problem solvers, we continue to create spaces where people can thrive. #BuildSG59 #NDP59  Images courtesy of National Museum of Singapore, National Heritage Board.

More green space, more connectivity, and a more sustainable future? This project transforms a city into a vibrant, urban industrial city of tomorrow.   Cilegon, known as one of the earliest industrial areas in Indonesia, is home to PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk (KS), the largest steel maker in Indonesia. This industrial city serves as a tribute to history and local identity while playing a pivotal role in the city’s economy in terms of attracting international investments.   Tasked with its masterplan revitalisation, the Surbana Jurong Indonesia team reviewed the 2,700-hectare area, which includes a mature industrial estate owned by KS, as well as designed a Revitalisation Concept Master Plan for a 270-hectare township. This encompasses new commercial and housing developments, alongside a revamped staff housing compound.   The team’s approach focuses on adaptive reuse of existing staff housing and industrial spaces, enhancing heritage preservation while reducing carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development.   Central to the vision is a new urban landscape including a communal space with an interactive water feature, where the community can engage with the regenerated lake surrounded by a tropical forest. This forward-looking township promotes a walkable environment, interconnected pedestrian and cycle routes branching from a central green spine. This holistic vision not only rejuvenates the area but also enhances community well-being and economic opportunities, shaping a sustainable future for Cilegon.
