In early 2023, Suzhou-based educator Glory Goh met with an accident that left her with brain and skull injuries. Miraculously, she had no memory of the incident and thus, no PTSD. Her rehabilitation process led her to discover regenerative medicine and the importance of community. Doctors noted that her pace of recovery was “phenomenal”—hardly a surprise, as Glory had developed an obsession with health and fitness. She worked out regularly, slept well to aid better brain health, and played computer games for visual training. Above all, she credits her stellar post-accident health to her supportive friends and staff: “With the support of those who care, things can get better.” She continues to make an impact as an educator, animal rescue worker, and volunteer: https://lnkd.in/gu92B4R6 &utm_campaign=organic-li&utm_content=lf #CommunityLeader

Can an app revive Singapore’s cherished kampung spirit and spark a new wave of community philanthropy? 🏠 💪 This is the vision behind GoodHood.SG, founded by tech entrepreneur Nigel Teo. In a city racing towards modernity, GoodHood.SG is breaking the mould by rekindling neighbourly connections through technology and compassion. Described by Teo as “a citizen-led movement,” GoodHood.SG is not just another app – it's a mission to foster kindness and support in Singapore’s communities. Philanthropy lies at its core, driving initiatives like #KindCooks, which mobilises home chefs to provide free meals to those in need during the pandemic. 👨🍳🍲 “When it is community-first, we are most concerned with driving real impact to the community, instead of being influenced by various stakeholders who may have other objectives for doing community like profits or community.” Teo says. “It was my desire for community and connection that formed the bedrock of Boutiques Singapore.” When Danish artist Charlotte Cain moved to Singapore in 1989 as a trailing spouse, she never imagined becoming an entrepreneur. Yet, her brainchild Boutiques Singapore – a biannual retail extravaganza celebrating brands spanning women and men’s fashion and accessories, furniture and home décor, lifestyle, food, children’s products, has been going strong for the last 22 years. It first started out as a small-scale affair involving only 16 designers, whereas its present-day version, slated to take place in November 2024, will host 300 brands across seven rooms at the iconic F1 Pit Building. Local brands and community organisations like GINLEE Studio Pte Ltd, Moom Health, Carrie K., Babes Pregnancy Crisis Support Ltd, and Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT) have appeared in previous iterations of Boutiques Singapore, given Charlotte’s personal philosophy of supporting local creatives. There is a stereotype that Singaporeans are all work, no play. Parklab Group Singapore founder Jensen Goh is one of a growing community of creatives overturning such stereotypes as he seeks to reimagine playgrounds as urban spaces that spark joy, and believes that play is a fundamental aspect of life. “We didn’t come to this world to work. We came to live, to explore, and most importantly, to have fun,” says Jensen, who views this philosophy as the driving force behind every Parklab project. To bring his playgrounds to life, the former facilities manager is leveraging:  💚 Green principles, via the use of materials like sustainable timber 🎨 Artistic vision, brought to life in the form of whimsical designs  ⌨️ Technological prowess such as augmented reality to visualise play structures in real-time Click to read the full story of his creative journey. “Where are you from? What is your ethnicity?” Singaporean ethnographer Kalpana Vignehsa, PhD views these questions as oversimplifications, as boxes and labels don’t do justice to people’s complex personal histories and identities. And while she is proud of her Sri Lankan roots and understands her cultural heritage well, she mentions that there is so much more to her. “I prefer to think of ethnic culture as something you can hold dear and carry along with you, without it being the only thing, or one of the main things, that defines you,” she says. Married to an Australian academic with African-American and Indian heritage, Dr Kalpana is raising a multicultural family in Singapore. At home, the couple have important conversations with their young son about race –  a concept that scientists have long regarded as biologically meaningless – in an attempt to embrace diversity and reject negative ideas around skin colour. After spending half her life abroad, Kalpana returned to Singapore in 2018 to be closer to her ageing mother and joined the Institute of Policy Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy as a researcher on social integration – read her story here. #integration #diversity #humansofsgn

Durreen Shahnaz was just three years old when the Bangladesh Liberation War erupted. Amidst the chaos, her family instilled in her a deep sense of empathy and social responsibility, often sharing their resources and inviting the less fortunate into their home for a meal. “These early lessons in compassion and resilience were pivotal,” Durreen reflects. “Witnessing the struggles of marginalised communities first-hand ignited in me a fierce commitment to empowering underserved populations, especially women.” In 1989, she became the first Bangladeshi woman to work on Wall Street at only 21 years old. And now, she’s breaking barriers again by founding Impact Investment Exchange (IIX), the world’s first social stock exchange. Through innovative initiatives like the Women’s Livelihood Bond, IIX empowers millions of women and underserved communities worldwide, from Singapore as its base. Discover how Durreen is redefining finance for societal good: https://lnkd.in/g6CgmVnh #ImpactInvesting #SocialGood #WomenInFinance
