Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) reposted this
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced the release of the "Transforming the Singapore Economy” report by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore) at the Singapore Apex Business Summit. The report, covering the period from 2016 to 2023, highlighted the significant progress and performance of Singapore's economic sectors, including Sea Transport. Sea Transport is one of the sectors that remained resilient during COVID-19 and amidst geopolitical trends. Supported by a strong tripartite partnership among industry stakeholders, unions, and government agencies, the sector not only navigated the challenges of the pandemic but emerged stronger from 2020 to 2023. Guided by ITM, the sector registered real value-added (VA) and real value-added per worker (VAPW) growth of 3.8% p.a. and 4.1% p.a. respectively from 2016 to 2023. These achievements highlighted the sector's robust performance in value-added and productivity. From 2020 to 2023, the industry remained resilient throughout the pandemic and recovered strongly post-pandemic. The Port of Singapore continued to strengthen its connectivity and efficiency, enhancing its position as a trusted port, and strengthening our value-add as an international maritime centre. Singapore’s container throughput reached a new record-high of 39.0 million TEUs in 2023, surpassing previous record of 37.6 million TEUs in 2021. Singapore continues to be well-connected to the rest of the world despite supply chain disruptions. The Report not only showcases our transformational efforts but also outlines the future priorities for Singapore’s economic agenda. We are grateful for the unwavering support of our stakeholders and partners. As we move forward, we will continue to work closely with our partners to invest in the industry, enhance our competitiveness, and achieve greater milestones for Maritime Singapore.
