Speaking from his decades of experience as a practicing engineer and as a Green Mark Professional, Mr. Lee shared his insights into the ever-evolving landscape of engineering the 21st Century during his address. He stressed on the importance of interdisciplinary skills and having an adaptive and collaborative attitude as a fresh graduate entering the workforce. He also focused on making an impact for good, namely in the areas of sustainability and climate change. He emphasised that engineers contribute directly to the quality of our spaces, and by extension, #Singapore’s climate goals. We extend our heartiest congratulations to the graduates of Class 2024 and look forward to working with you to engineer Singapore's built environment towards one that is greener, healthier and low carbon. #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #Design #Engineering #Commencement

A report by #G20’s financial watchdog found that due to insufficient data, G20 financial regulators are overlooking nature-related risks such as #biodiversity loss and #deforestation, and are focusing largely on climate risks. However, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) report highlights that losses in nature can cause credit losses, defaults, and abrupt price corrections, posing financial risks to banks. Physical risks stem from nature's degradation but can impact activities in key sectors such as food production. The FSB calls for improved data and measures to assess these risks.

M&E, or mechanical and electrical systems, are the backbone of a green building's functionality. These systems are designed to optimise energy use and create a sustainable indoor environment for occupants. By efficiently managing heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting, M&E systems significantly contribute to a green building's reduced environmental impact and lower operating costs. This afternoon, more than 20 Green Mark Professionals had the opportunity to navigate M&E solutions that can help address decarbonisation challenges for the built environment sector. Experts from #SGBC Member Danfoss walked participants through a slew of low-carbon M&E technologies that support green building certification schemes in the areas of energy efficiency, maintainability and intelligence, as well as developments for sector coupling applications. #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #SGBCLearningJourney #GMP

Institutional investors prioritise environmental, social, and governance (#ESG) factors due to regulatory compliance and strategic goals, while retail investors often do so based on personal values and long-term #sustainability. For consumers interested in building a sustainable investment portfolio, Ms Eugenia Koh, global head of sustainable finance, wealth and retail banking at Standard Chartered, suggests three common approaches: exclusions, whereby consumers avoid controversial sectors; ESG integration; and lastly, focusing on sustainability themes.

While Singapore is experiencing a steady growth in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) registered, Singapore’s adoption rate still falls far behind that of other countries, such as Norway, where 90 percent of the new cars sold are #EVs. Reasons cited for the slow uptake of EVs include #infrastructure limitations such as inadequate and limited accessibility to EV charging stations. Furthermore, charging costs are increasing amidst falling petrol prices. #ElectricVehicles

Sustainable building is not just about energy efficiency, it is about thermal comfort as well as occupant health & wellbeing. By taking a comprehensive approach to sustainable building design, we can create spaces that are not only energy-efficient but also comfortable, healthy, and promote occupant wellbeing. At this afternoon’s #SGBC Seminar, supported by SGBC Member Knauf, nearly 200 participants from across the built environment sector delved into strategies for building ventilation to achieve a healthy and sustainable built environment. With a focus on leveraging natural and mixed-mode ventilation for sustainable building operation, our speakers from Singapore Polytechnic, Knauf and Building System and Diagnostics Pte Ltd spoke extensively on ventilation best practices, design approaches to integrate natural ventilation with mechanical systems for a more efficient and sustainable approach as well as novel cooling technologies. With the increasing focus on ventilation approaches to address overcooling and reduce reliance on air-conditioning systems, the Seminar provided a comprehensive overview of how to approach building ventilation. #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Ventilation

In greening the built environment, there are three key considerations: occupant 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩, 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙩 optimisation, and 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙤𝙣 reduction. Achieving these three “Cs” may seem like a distant goal for some, but innovations in green technology can move them to reality. Harnessing the rich insights from utilities data, the speed and predictive power from #AI and #IoT, together with seamless integration into existing building management systems, building owners and facility managers can be empowered to advance sustainability outcomes. Join us for a #SGBC Seminar focused on exploring the three "Cs" on 1 Aug. 2024, organised in collaboration with SGBC Member SP Digital, a subsidiary of SP Group. We will take a look at smart utilities management that includes granular monitoring and analyses of utilities consumption across a portfolio of premises, micro-climate control of spaces within a building, as well as #EV charging capabilities of the property. With a good approach to setting carbon targets, achieving net zero can be made possible. Are your appliances environmentally friendly? Here are some tips to make informed choices when deciding which appliance to purchase with the climate vouchers. Mr Alvin Ee from National University of Singapore's Energy Studies Institute (ESI) suggests comparing the energy labels of appliances, considering the technologies used in the appliance, and using the appliances according to what they have been designed for. Dr Eddy Foo, a senior lecturer at Nanyang Technological University Singapore’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, also suggests considering the lifespan of an appliance and the take-back scheme. #TakeBackScheme
