In a recent assessment by the Climate Action Tracker (CAT), Singapore received a rating of “highly insufficient” for its climate targets. However, A/P Matthew Dearth from Nanyang Technological University Singapore critically suggests that despite the poor ratings, Singapore still has room to continue its role in leading the regional climate action. While carbon taxes in Singapore should be arguably higher and broadly applied, A/P Dearth explains that there is a need to cushion the sharp increases in prices by increasing the carbon tax gradually. Instead, he explains that attention should be given to the built environment, where collaborative investments in green building materials can help to reduce carbon footprints across the supply chain. #CarbonTax #GreenBuildingMaterials #CarbonFootprint

#Light’s crucial role in our built environment is often shadowed by its energy consumption and contribution to carbon emissions. However, strategic and sustainable lighting designs that prioritise functionality while minimising energy use offer great potential to promote energy efficiency while enhancing spatial comfort levels. This afternoon, we held a #SGBC Learning Journey to the premises of SGBC Member ERCO, where we delved deep into lighting design principles aimed at creating super-efficient spaces that prioritise human comfort and wellbeing. Along with uncovering insights on sustainable lighting practices, we also explored key techniques such as light hierarchy and the application of Human Centric Lighting, and had an informative time interacting with the innovative lighting solutions being showcased. Our Green Mark Professionals even learned about the significance of Environmental Product Declarations (#EPD), hearing about ERCO's journey to obtain EPDs for the majority of their lighting solutions. #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Lighting

Rising global temperatures are increasing the demand for air conditioning, contributing to environmental concerns. Mixed Mode Ventilation (#MMV) offers a sustainable alternative by prioritising natural ventilation and using mechanical cooling only when necessary. This approach can reduce energy consumption, improve indoor comfort, and enhance resilience to future challenges. At this #SGBC Seminar, the National University of Singapore (NUS) in collaboration with Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Kajima and SJ Group, will showcase the viability of MMV in #Singapore. Along with a sharing by NUS on key findings and lessons learnt from a recently completed living lab, speakers from the Kajima Technical Research Institute Singapore will also cover insights on smart cooling for the tropics as well as semi-outdoor workspaces. SGBC Member Keppel Ltd. has been awarded a 20-year contract to build and operate centralised cooling systems in three Build-To-Order (BTO) projects in #Tengah, slated for completion in 2027. Utilising industrial-grade materials to meet industry-standard performance and durability, Keppel will be incorporating innovative engineering and design features. The system will be remotely monitored and controlled by Keppel from its operation nerve centre. Starting on 30 Sep, homeowners of these BTO projects can visit Keppel’s experience centre at HDB Hub to learn more about the cooling system and view the mock-up of a home unit with the cooling system incorporated. #CentralisedCooling

With the built environment being one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions with 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions globally, reducing carbon emissions from construction activities is crucial to moving the needle on decarbonisation. This morning, we held a special #SGBC Distinguished Lecture with Tristram Carfrae RDI, themed 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙤𝙣-𝙉𝙚𝙪𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚. As a visionary structural engineer who has contributed to some of the world's most iconic buildings with some of the world’s best architects, Tristram discussed how innovation and forward-thinking approaches can drive significant progress in decarbonising the built environment, punctuated with many examples of exemplary green buildings from around the world. Our attendees definitely went away from the event with plenty of food for thought on accelerating efforts to reduce embodied carbon emissions in the built environment. We thank Arup for helping to make this Lecture possible and also JTC Corporation for supporting us as the venue partner! #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Engineering

As Singapore approaches the inter-monsoon months of October and November, urban farms in Singapore have set resilient operational practices to tide through the rainy season. In contrast to traditional farmers, higher rainfall may benefit their rainwater harvesting systems. For instance, #ComCorp actively recycles the water through a continuous recycling process using a filtration system. #RainwaterHarvesting #ClimateResilience

Temasek will provide S$1 million in concessional capital to help crowd capital for marginally bankable climate action initiatives. Concessional capital is a type of capital that absorbs more risks or takes a lower return and demonstrates Temasek’s commitment to driving the green transition. The chairman of Temasek, Lim Boon Heng, explains that this can create a catalytic effect in mobilising funding from other sources, including public, private and philanthropic capital providers.
