The best way to retire well is to start young. Our Head of Wealth Advisory, Aaron Chwee, joined other panellists on The Straits Times’ HeadSTart panel discussion on personal finance and the Fire (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. He shared how younger people who deploy a consistent amount into investments early can enjoy better growth and take on less risk in the future when retirement planning comes to the fore. Discipline, having a clear idea of your financial goals and having diversified investments were tips shared to help those along their Fire journey. Aaron shared how psychological health and wellness is important when considering retirement (or retiring early). Having a like-minded community or picking up a hobby – especially something that can turn into a secondary income – could become very important in helping individuals transition to full retirement. Aaron also acknowledged the challenges the sandwiched generation face in achieving Fire when they have competing priorities and need to deploy more resources to raise their kids, care for parents or finance their homes than to building up retirement funds. Ultimately, the panellists agreed that Fire isn’t for everybody. But for anyone hoping to Fat Fire (living more luxuriously post-retirement), Aaron’s advice is: Start young.

OCBC is proud to be one of the organisations in Singapore recognised as NVPC’s Champion of Good award winner. The enhanced recognition system places renewed emphasis on corporate purpose – that enterprises can, and should, pursue growth in ways that uplift people, strengthen our societies, and protect our planet.   Our community and sustainability efforts are driven through #OCBCCares Programme, which focus on helping the more vulnerable in society and doing our part to tackle climate change. Our employees volunteer actively, supporting our charity partners and engaging their beneficiaries regularly.   Through the #OCBCCares Programme, we target to address gaps and offer sustainable support to segments of the community that are underserved.   Thank you to everyone who contributed in our journey. We will continue to proactively reach out to our charity organisations, social workers, government bodies and non-government organisations (NGOs) to understand social issues and the underlying problems - This has enabled, and will continue to help, us to develop sustainable and long-term solutions for the communities that we support.

Leadership is the cornerstone of organisational success.    The launch of the inaugural OCBC SOAR Executive Development Programme is yet another demonstration of OCBC’s dedication to continuously strengthen our people asset.   A collaborative effort with the esteemed IMD Business School, the programme was strategically designed to develop their ambidextrous leadership capabilities, this first module expanded their understanding of global trends and sharpened their adaptability to “run the bank” and “change the bank” as participants leveraged both “perform” and “transform” mindsets to approach specific situations.   The participants were stretched out of their comfort zone through a series of intensive workshops, including group discussions, reflections, and simulations. Held at the IMD Singapore campus, the first of this 3-module programme united a diverse group of participants from across different entities in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Bank of Singapore, Great Eastern and Lion Global Investors.    Their journey in growing as future leaders of tomorrow will continue to unfold over the next 2 modules. Stay tuned to see how they take flight!   #OCBCSOAR #OpportunityStartsHere #EDP

Is gold all that glittery? Our customers doubled their gold investments in Q2 this year from Q4 last year.   Vasu Menon, our Managing Director of Investment Strategy, says gold is seen as a hedge against major uncertainties and is a useful portfolio diversifier. Major elections in the US and Europe could see the re-emergence of far-right politics, and all these major winds of change have effectively doubled the price of precious metals – like gold – over the past 7 years.

Children are the future leaders who will shape our world and one of the key challenges that they will face is climate change. With the help of Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation and Shanghai Pudong Women's Federation. OCBC organised an immersive summer camp for children. Called the “Little Green Summer Camp”, participants were encouraged to be the next generation of leaders to protect the environment and also basked in the excitement surrounding the upcoming Olympic games. During the camp, these children participated in eco-friendly craft workshops, fun courses to teach about green finance, environment-themed painting classes and science experiments. Through learning and exploration, they gained a deeper appreciation of sustainable green practices and reinforced their sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. Riding on the buzz from the upcoming Olympic games, they also tried their hand in several sports activities such as shooting, trampoline gymnastics, and skiing. These immersive experiences boosted their enthusiasm for sports, which inspired them to discover healthy and sustainable approaches to learning and living. The Little Green Summer Camp is one of the key steps in supporting children's educational development and is also one of the ways we are contributing to the fight against climate change across the region. #OCBCCares

The OCBC SME Index, which measures SME health and performance based on their transactional data, rose to 50.2 in Q2 of 2024. This was up from 49.7 in Q1. This turnaround in SMEs’ performance was led by export-oriented industries, which accounted for three of the four industries that went from contraction to expansion. The Index is expected to remain relatively flat for the rest of 2024, on the back of persistent geopolitical uncertainties.

Orchestrated by our very own Group Talent and Management team, the session garnered over 100 enthusiastic participants, including alumni. The highlight of the day was the inspiring fireside chat led by our esteemed senior leaders – Teck Long Tan, Linus Goh, Ken Lai, Harry Lim, Hwee Boon Lee and Carina Lee – who generously shared their personal leadership journeys in OCBC, offering hard-won gems of wisdom and invaluable insights to a new generation of future leaders. We are incredibly excited to see participants forging connections and sparking new possibilities that would expand their vision for their aspirations, stretch their dynamism and strengthen their capabilities, for now and beyond.    #OCBCSTRIVE #OpportunityStartsHere #EDP #OCBCSOAR #OCBCCareers
