I’m excited to share that on 2nd August, I completed a 10-week internship as a Building Engineer Intern at OBAYASHI SINGAPORE PRIVATE LIMITED, one of the largest A1 contractors in Singapore. Stepping into the construction industry without any prior site experience was a significant challenge. The environment was often sunny, dusty, and noisy, but I quickly learned that dedicated engineers are always on-site to ensure that buildings are constructed according to design. The learning curve was steep, especially regarding reading drawings and conducting site inspections, which I had little prior knowledge of. Thankfully, my senior, Ye Yint Zaw, was incredibly supportive, guiding me step by step despite his demanding schedule. The Obayashi team was skilled, friendly, willing to teach, and always reliable. During my time there, I gained hands-on experience in site inspections, precast order planning, and reading engineering drawings, among other skills. This internship gave me valuable insights into the construction industry, revealing how challenging and dynamic it can be. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity given to me by HR Sarah Wong and our Project Managers, Mr. Chua and Mr. Leow. Their support made this experience truly enriching. OBAYASHI MAKE BEYOND!!!

Last week marked the completion of my 1-year Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP) at OBAYASHI SINGAPORE PRIVATE LIMITED, where I had the privilege of working as an M&E Engineer. My goal was to join a role focused on problem-solving and project management, and I am thrilled to have been part of the M&E Department, playing a key role in advancing the development of a major telecommunication facility in Singapore. Throughout this journey, I took on a variety of key responsibilities, including: •Technical Management: I meticulously managed critical technical data, including Shop Drawings, Method Statements for installation, Operation Maintenance Manuals, and Defect Liability Period (DLP) schedules. Ensuring the accuracy and completeness of this documentation was crucial for meeting regulatory standards and project specifications. •Planning and Coordination: I played a central role in both short- and long-term planning, overseeing material procurement and tracking long-lead equipment to ensure timely delivery. This was vital for maintaining project schedules and optimizing site efficiency. •Technical Problem-Solving and Compliance: I addressed technical challenges through close collaboration with the design department, resolving issues promptly to ensure smooth project progress. Additionally, I managed specialized tasks such as DFMA Module Load Calculations and acoustic planning, while ensuring adherence to Green Mark and BCA Buildability scores. This experience has been both challenging and rewarding. I am sincerely grateful for the guidance and support provided by Mr. Julian Yap, Mr. Joe Soo, and Mr. John Liu. Their mentorship has been invaluable. I also want to extend my thanks to my colleagues in the project NLT team for their collaboration and encouragement. Your support has been instrumental in making this journey so enriching and successful! Looking ahead, I am excited about the opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to future projects. I am eager to continue growing professionally and contribute to new and innovative projects in the industry.

Accurate and detailed BIM models are crucial for enhancing project collaboration and efficiency. Providing precise BIM models with tender stage data can save resources, reduce abortive work, and improve project delivery. However, contractors face challenges in developing such models, especially in Design & Build Contracts. Progressive contractors are addressing this by proactively establishing internal BIM modelling guidelines. Keryn Ng Kah Yee and Guojian Ou from Mandai Wildlife Group were part of the team that designed and built the Bird Paradise. The project is an example of collaborative success, showing how designers, engineers and contractors who work from the outset can efficiently construct innovative and sustainable spaces for Singaporeans to live, work and play. Bird Paradise was built using smart solutions and innovations, underpinned by the usage of BIM. BIM enabled digital twinning, which real world data could be fed into the digital model that helped improve productivity. BIM also was used to design and manufacture the tall structural steel columns, and 3D scanning was used to ensure correct installation. It also boasts progressive features, such as the energy-smart Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove (BCA Green Mark Platinum certified!), enhanced ecological connectivity for local biodiversity, and wastewater recycling plants at the Mandai Wildlife Reserve – contributing to Singapore's efforts in building a more sustainable built environment.
