The Art And Soul Of Southeast Asia

About us

National Gallery Singapore is a leading visual arts institution overseeing the largest public collection of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Situated at the birthplace of modern Singapore, in the heart of the Civic District, the Gallery is housed in two national monuments – City Hall and former Supreme Court – that have been beautifully restored and transformed into this exciting 64,000 square metres venue. Reflecting Singapore’s unique heritage and geographical location, the Gallery aims to be a progressive museum that creates dialogues between the art of Singapore, Southeast Asia and the world to foster and inspire a creative and inclusive society. This is reflected in our collaborative research, education initiatives, long-term and special exhibitions, and innovative programming. The Gallery also works with international museums such as National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Orsay and Tate Britain to jointly present Southeast Asian art in the global context, positioning Singapore as a key node in the global visual arts scene. In 2020, the Gallery was the only museum in Southeast Asia that received a ranking in The Art Newspaper’s annual global survey of attendance at art museums, taking 20th place. In 2018, the Gallery was also the first museum in Asia to receive the Children in Museums Award by the European Museum Academy and Hands On! International Association of Children in Museums. It also won the awards for “Best Theme Attraction” at TTG Travel Awards 2017, “Best Attraction Experience”, “Breakthrough Contribution to Tourism” and “Best Customer Service (Attractions)” at the prestigious Singapore Tourism Awards in 2016 for its role in adding to the vibrancy of Singapore’s tourism landscape.

We are proud to unveil our special collaboration with the National Library Board titled "Book Bugs", a bug-themed collectible card game to encourage children to read in English and Mother Tongue languages. Together with the #PublicLibrarySG team, the Gallery has designed a unique red-winged #BookBugs character armed with a paintbrush named Art-terfly as part of this special card release. Visitors can borrow books to earn reward points, redeem Book Bugs cards for play and exchange, and collect unique stamps at different public libraries. August has been buzzing with energy here at the Gallery! Here’s a glimpse into the fun shared among our team: Gallery Staff Day: We took a break from work to enjoy cosmic bowling, along with endless rounds of claw machines and arcade games. The day ended with a prize presentation for our top-scoring teams and a special award for the “most gutter”! 🏆 National Day Party: We celebrated Singapore's birthday with a delightful afternoon tea, indulging in local snacks and drinks, and nostalgic tidbits. Our competitive spirit also shone through in a trivia quiz that tested our knowledge on Singapore. 🇸🇬🎉 We deeply value the dedication of our team and strive to create moments where everyone can unwind and connect. This year's "Discotheque"-themed Dinner and Dance had us grooving through the ages, from classic disco to modern beats! 💃🕺 Our annual celebration was a fantastic opportunity for teams to unwind and connect beyond the office. Creativity was off the charts in our best-dress competition—think dazzling sequins and over-the-top wigs adding unique flair to the dance floor. The evening also featured spectacular performances by our talented Gallery stars, making it a true testament to our "work hard, play hard" spirit! ✨ Cheers to the team for their incredible energy and for making the evening truly unforgettable! #NationalGallerySingapore

While nothing beats attending programmes in person, the Gallery tries to make available many of its events available online afterwards for audiences who couldn't attend or would like to re-view the discussions. If you missed the 25 May talk "The Original, the Copy, and the Remade: Artworks and Their Doubles" by Professor Maurizio Peleggi you can view it now on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gZW9Z5JR Many thanks to Maurizio Peleggi for the great lecture and Culture Academy Singapore for co-presenting it with us. #NationalGallerySingapore #LetArtSurpriseYou

The Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of "Laws of Our Land: Foundations of a New Nation" at the Supreme Court Wing, Level 3, Chief Justice's Chamber and Office. Organised by the National Library Board, this exhibition showcases pivotal laws that have shaped modern-day Singapore, namely the Citizenship Ordinance, the Women’s Charter, and the Employment Act. Visitors will have the opportunity to view 37 artefacts from the collections of the National Archives of Singapore, the National Library and partner institutions, and engage with interactive games and augmented reality offerings to learn about the historical circumstances that led to the enactment of these laws. The exhibition is also in line with NLB’s LAB25 (Libraries & Archives Blueprint 2025) goal to be Singapore’s Storyteller, bringing more areas of our history to light and inspiring more to be storytellers too. Admission to the exhibition requires a General Admission pass to National Gallery Singapore, which is free for Singaporeans and PRs. Guided tours are available on the third Friday of every month.
