Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! While most of us associate the festival with mooncakes and lanterns, it's also about reunion and family togetherness. And for Sim Weijie, mooncakes hold an even more special significance. Formerly a teacher, Weijie now helps run his family's Hung Huat Cakes and Pastries stall at Sims Vista, which specialises in Teochew mooncakes and other traditional baked goodies. He spoke to us about his life as a hawker, modernising the stall's operations, and where he seeks inspiration for new bakes. Check out our interview below! #OurHawkerCentres #SupportOurHawkers #OurHawkerCulture

Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore reposted this
Sometimes the barrier to starting an impact project isn't just financial. In this piece with Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore's SG Eco Fund, I reflect a little bit on how The Weird and Wild started. (And also share a cool opportunity that deserves more eyeballs, please check that out!!) This was 2018. While I had the enabling tools of an iPad with the first-gen Apple Pencil, I was doodling a lot on free apps with a lot of self-doubt about starting an Instagram page dedicated to environmental topics that I cared about. The page was a huge labour of not just love but also emotional support to get started. I was lucky to have been supported by people in my life who gave me the strength and also resources to start The Weird and Wild and grow it to what you see today. I was really glad to have had a low financial barrier to entry to start this work given that the tools I needed I bought secondhand or were free. It's funny to note that I was an Eco Fund grantee in the first run, but eventually pulled out as I struggled with so much self-doubt, procrastination and fear getting to work on it, worrying about Not Being Good Enough or skilled enough. This still rear its head once in awhile. But the Eco Fund team helped me figure out my options before I pulled the plug. But when costs get prohibitively high, it's easy to get someone to bail on their ideas. In Singapore, many civil society and ground up groups struggle with space rental especially when organising something like a simple gathering or event can rack up significant costs given the price of rentals. That being said, I can't imagine the costs that budding innovators will bear when it comes to buying machinery or equipment to realize their projects. If you're just starting out, you don't always need a grand big plan. A small idea can blossom into a larger initiative and grow in ways you'd never imagine. If you do have a grand big plan, it's not impossible for you to realize those dreams with the SG Eco Fund that supports projects big or small. Applications for projects requesting funds of more than $10,000 are open till 31 August 2024. But for smaller projects requesting up to $10,000, do not fret as applications are open year-round. Besides funding, you also get access to a community of like-minded individuals, and opportunities for collaboration and outreach. So get applying now or share this with someone who might need that extra boost :) Thank you SG Eco Fund team and Sonja Wong for commissioning me for this piece, it was a pleasure working with you! And also shoutout to my past Eco Fund grant manager Ethan Nava who was a kind, guiding force supporting many grantees and aspiring grantees with their projects.
