Thanks to the Association of Thai Students in the United States of America (ATSA) for having me on their panel this past weekend. It was great discussing innovation in Thailand with a panel incl. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok; Professor Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong, President of the National Science and Technology, Development Agency (NSTDA); Professor Dr. Nijasri Charnnarong Suwanwela, Associate Dean for Academic Services, Faculty of Medicine Chulalongkorn University; and Mr. Chanond Ruangkritya, Chief Executive Officer, Ananda Development PCL. Some thoughts I shared: 1. Chicken and egg issue -- The common and popular narrative of lack of startups in Thailand is to point at the dearth of support from the 'system' and the presence of 'boogeyman' large conglomerates that compete with upstarts. A more interesting, contrarian, and supply-driven view is that Thai talent -- and Asian talent in general -- tends to gravitate towards more conventional, high status (corporate) jobs due to our collectivist and conformist societies. It also doesn't help that Thailand, being one of the more developed markets in SEA, also has a higher percentage of these 'status' jobs available to absorb talent. Rather than waiting for the 'system' to get ready, aspiring entrepreneurs need to take a higher agency, intrinsically motivated approach and then 'demand' will come naturally. 2. Another misconception is the lack of funding in Thailand for startups. Every three months, I get VCs asking me for new founder leads in Thailand. And every time I have to disappoint them. In addition, the Board of Investment of Thailand also very recently announced its first matching fund (https://lnkd.in/ggtwQ4xJ). The demand is there and will only increase; we just need more talent to follow their own path against societal pressures. 3. Due to lack of competition resulting from 1 and 2 above, and the fact that Thailand has natural advantages in specific clusters such as EV, creative industries, and healthcare, Thailand is one of the best places to build companies. 4. On career development / choices -- life is like an RPG (role playing game). Unfortunately, most people pick the wrong character and level up the wrong stats. It's all about fit. Not everyone is suited for entrepreneurship, and not everyone is fit for a big company job. We just need to encourage the 1% that pick high status jobs but actually want to build their own companies to pursue their dreams.

We are pleased to share that Smit.fit's abstract was selected for poster presentation at the American Diabetes Association's 84th Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida from June 21st to 24th, 2024 at the Orange County Convention Center. The study evaluated the impact of Smit.fit’s CGM-powered Diabetes Care program on HbA1c reduction and Time in Range (TIR) improvement for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in India. Highlights of the Study: 1. Conducted over 2 years with 808 adults with T2DM across 50 Indian cities. 2. Implemented Smit.fit’s 4-month Diabetes Care Program, which includes Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and HbA1c tests, facilitated by certified health experts and tracked on the Smit.fit app. 3. Significant improvements seen in HbA1c and Time in Range levels: - 1.07% HbA1c reduction from baseline to post-program (Figure 4) - 0.65% HbA1c reduction from 1st week to 2nd week of CGM (Figure 5) - 7.16% increase in Time in Range from 1st week to 2nd week of CGM (Figure 5) Smit.fit’s comprehensive, data-driven intervention led to substantial HbA1c reductions and improved glucose control, especially among participants with initially uncontrolled HbA1c (HbA1c > 7%), where 71.92% of users showed > 0.5% HbA1c reduction. 🇮🇳 India has one of the highest cancer mortality-to-incidence ratios globally. Here are some statistics about Oncology care in India that might shock you: 1️⃣ Currently, only about 1% of the rural population is screened for key cancers (cervical, breast and oral cancer). 2️⃣ When it comes to seeking treatment, out of the 640 districts in India, only ~175 have a Comprehensive Care Centre, covering just 40% to 45% of the population. The remaining 55% to 60% of the rural population must travel or temporarily relocate outside their districts to receive treatment. 👨👩👧👦 Cancer does not discriminate - it affects every person, irrespective of where they live. 🔦 The team recently wrote an article on the existing gaps in oncology care in India, highlighting the current disparities between urban and rural areas, and the challenges to improving access in underserved regions. 🏥 In this article, we feature CION Cancer Clinics, one of MVP's earliest fund investments, that aims to solve this huge national issue in India.
