In my work, I encounter many cases that highlight the critical need for effective communication between parents and their children. One recent case involving an 8-year-old boy vividly illustrated this point. This young boy had been expressing his frustration and anger through profanities and scolding his mother. The situation escalated to the point where, after a particularly difficult week, his mother, overwhelmed and at her breaking point, slapped him. This only led to more aggressive behavior from the boy, who responded by scolding his mother back. The climax of this distressing situation came when, on a Thursday night, the boy left a heart-wrenching note: "Goodbye mum. I will not stay with you all anymore. I want to leave this home on Saturday." 😔 This case is a powerful reminder that while disciplining a child is sometimes necessary, how we communicate with them is equally, if not more, important. Miscommunication and lack of understanding can lead to drastic outcomes, such as a child feeling the need to run away from home. Here are a few takeaways from this incident: Active Listening: Children need to feel heard. Active listening helps them feel valued and understood. Open Dialogue: Creating an environment where children feel safe to express their emotions can prevent misunderstandings and resentment. Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging good behavior through positive reinforcement rather than punishment fosters better relationships and mutual respect. Professional Help: Sometimes, seeking help from a counselor or therapist can provide new perspectives and strategies for both parents and children. Let’s work towards building healthier, more communicative family environments. A little empathy and understanding can go a long way in nurturing a child's well-being and preventing conflicts from escalating. #communication #children #behaviour

We’re back with a new episode on The Little Pod! This time we sat down with Lavender Tan, an experienced Clinical Psychologist, to unpack a pressing topic: What if your kid is the bully? 😧 A tough topic to tackle, but an important one! Parents, we believe this conversation is essential, as Lavender offers valuable insights that every parent should take the time to listen to and reflect upon whether or not your kid is a bully. As parents, we have the power to make change and shape our little ones to be kind and empathetic individuals. The VC-backed founder turning solopreneur

I assumed that by becoming a parent I would lose my freedom. How am I supposed to be an entrepreneur, husband, and father all in one day... ...all the while, pursuing my other personal goals? 🤨 You can't avoid it: The older one gets, the more responsibilities one takes on. I thought it'd be too hard to juggle. I thought I'd need to sacrifice myself. But I learned that it comes down to setting very distinct boundaries for when I wear which hat. And this 3-pronged approach helps me keep those boundaries clear as day. ☀️ 📽️ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 I first start by reflecting on my self-image. Who do I want to be? For example, for my health, I want to be that person who is fit and feels strong in their body. 💪 To my daughter, I want to be the dad who shows up. Who is there for her when it matters... ...and when it seemingly doesn't. 👨👧 📏 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞 Then I create a rule that will help me achieve that vision of myself. One of the rules for my health is: I work out every morning before I start work. 🏋🏻♂️ I do this for at least 30 minutes. And my daughter? I drop her off and pick her up from school every weekday. No exceptions. 🚫 🧾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 The last step (and for me the most fun one): I keep myself accountable and do so publicly. I post all of my daily workouts on Strava. 🧭 Perhaps unwittingly, it keeps my friends and followers in the know of that rule that I've set. And thanks to LittleLives — through their daily check-in / check-out photo — I get proof of attendance. 📸 I know Sun Ho and the rest of the team didn't design it this way, but that's how I keep myself in check that I showed up for my daughter. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 So through projecting who I want to be, by setting rules, and keeping myself accountable publicly, I have created clear boundaries that help me embody all versions of Michael I want to be.   I now believe, that becoming a father didn't drag me down, but benefited me in perfecting my time management skills. 🥲 For you to reflect on a Sunday: How do you set boundaries between the different roles you take on in a day? If you feel like it, leave your thoughts in the comments 😊 #worklifebalance #timemanagement #personalhealth #parenthood #linkedinnewsasia
