In honor of our friend and former colleague, we wanted to share one of our favorite stories and photos about Dr Dave Huntzinger … Dr. Dave Huntzinger had a long and storied career in aviation. Not only a pilot who served our country in the Coast Guard, but he was also the first to receive a Ph.D. in Safety from the Union Institute & University in 1995. It was during the doctoral studies that he moved from accident investigation to aviation safety at the operator level. Before that shift, Dave was a member of the Boeing Air Safety (Crash) Investigation Office, and it took him to an unbelievable crash site in Guatemala City. In April 1994, a TACA B767-200 landed long and fast on a wet runway at Guatemala’s capital city airport. Braking action quickly became ineffective, and the captain was forced to intentionally steer the plane off course, avoiding a cliff at the end of the runway. The aircraft came to rest next to the community outhouse. Thankfully, the passengers and crew - and the lucky soul in the outhouse - were evacuated with only minor injuries. Soon after this event occurred, Dave was asked to help with the accident investigation and gained a unique perspective from the “luckiest” seat in town. While the picture captured a light-hearted moment in his career, it also captured the seriousness of his life’s commitment to the aviation industry. Those of us who got to work with Dave are enormously grateful for his friendship and his contribution to aviation safety.
