Saving the Sea basses! 🐟🛡️ #DidYouKnow that Scale Drop Disease Virus (SDDV) is endemic in the Southeast Asian region, and causes fish to shed scales, develop skin lesions, and suffer high mortality rates—sometimes up to 70% in both young and adult fish? This poses a major threat to the sustainability and profitability of Asian sea bass farming, making the development of an effective vaccine essential. A*STAR Infectious Diseases Labs - ID Labs and UVAXX are combatting this with the development of a groundbreaking epitope-based vaccine that targets specific parts of the virus to trigger immune responses, strengthening the fish's natural defences and boasting a 75% efficacy rate. A potential game-changer for aquaculture, this vaccine promises to protect fish, boost sustainability, and transform the industry. Dr Ken Loh, Senior Scientist, A*STAR ID Labs said, “The vaccine development process comprised developing the virus infection model, developing advanced lab systems to study the virus, detailed mapping of viral proteins to identify immune-triggering parts, rigorous lab trials and efficacy analysis.” Professor Laurent Renia, A*STAR Senior Fellow, A*STAR ID Labs, said “Derived from pathogen proteins, the epitopes, are the targets of specific arm of the immune system such as antibodies that neutralize viral particles, and killer cells to directly eliminate infected cells and regulate the immune responses. In many ways, this epitope-based vaccine design is novel for the aquaculture sector and we are energised and committed to identify more use cases of this technology together with UVAXX.” Learn more about A*STAR ID Labs’ research efforts here: https://lnkd.in/gGgvbNPZ #ASTARforIndustry #ExcellentSciences #EnhancingLives

Thank you, Senior Minister of State Low Yen Ling, for gracing the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS) 10th anniversary celebration and sharing your valuable insights. We appreciate your support as we continue our skin research efforts to benefit Singapore and the international community. #ASTARforSG #ExcellentScience #EnhancingLives #CreatingGrowth
Happy to attend Skin Research Institute of Singapore’s (SRIS) 10th anniversary celebration. Established in 2013 by A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research National Healthcare Group and Nanyang Technological University Singapore SRIS has made significant contributions to dermatological research by focusing on developing unique resources and technologies for the Asian phenotype and skin diseases prevalent in Asians. In my speech, I shared three key areas vital to SRIS’ next lap in pioneering skin research and innovation - (i) to continue building on SRIS’ strengths to achieve impactful outcomes; (ii) to deepen industry collaborations to accelerate the translation of research into commercially viable solutions; and (iii) to train and attract talent to support and advance SRIS as a world class research institute. Congratulations again to SRIS on your 10th anniversary and may you continue to advance Singapore’s and the region’s skin research.

Honoured to have hosted Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry at NAMIC Singapore (National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster) yesterday. The visit shed insights on the RIE2025 #AdditiveManufacturing (AM) strategy and its implementation status to position Singapore as an advanced manufacturing and innovation hub. Local companies from various sectors and service providers showcased and presented their AM adoption progress and milestones. 2M was updated on AM’s sectoral outcomes and how the government can continue to support AM adoption in Singapore. NAMIC is a national platform hosted by A*STAR, supported by the National Research Foundation Singapore. The innovation cluster aims to accelerate the adoption of hybrid and digital additive manufacturing technologies under Singapore Manufacturing and Economy 2030 vision, helping industries transform towards innovation and high value-added manufacturing using sustainably sourced, nature-based designs and cradle-to-cradle on-demand manufacturing. Keen to adopt AM technologies? Find out more: https://namic.sg/ #AstarforEnterprise #AstarforIndustry #CreatingGrowth #3DPrinting
Additive manufacturing (AM) has been a gamechanger, disrupting traditional manufacturing methods by allowing rapid prototyping of parts and products. To better position Singapore as a hub for AM, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC Singapore) was launched in 2015 as a national platform hosted by A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, to assist our startups and SMEs to leverage AM technologies, help larger enterprises to deepen their AM capabilities, and support our students and researchers hoping to commercialise cutting edge AM technologies to spin-off companies. I was delighted to visit NAMIC and had insightful conversations with industry representatives that have embraced AM as a key technology driver in their business models. They shared their perspectives on how they have used AM to create novel products that have the potential to transform their industry sectors. Singapore needs to develop our capabilities and build a skilled talent pool well versed in AM. As AM technology improves and finds new applications in many sectors, Singapore will need to ride this AM wave to ensure that we stay ahead as a high tech, innovation-driven hub.
