Singapore Food Agency has approved the import and consumption of 16 insect species, including crickets, grasshoppers, locusts, mealworms, and silkworms in the country. As the insect is not a common item in Singaporean cuisine, consumer acceptance of the innovative dish has to be established. To raise awareness, scientific and factual knowledge has to be disseminated to the public. In an interview with Channel 8 Mediacorp Pte Ltd, I highlighted a few key points: 🐛 Insect food has been consumed for generations and is both edible and nutritious. 🦗 To ensure the safety of insect food, sources and processing must be safe and of high quality. 🐛 Proper cooking methods are essential for preserving the nutrients of insect food. 🦗 Food innovation can encourage the consumption of insect food through novel food products. 🐛 Individuals who are allergic to certain foods, such as seafood, should exercise caution when consuming insect food. Overall, insect food is a more sustainable food source that can be incorporated into a well-balanced diet without compromising taste, but personal preferences and health concerns should also be considered!
