Every year, the Swedish Institute gathers all new SI scholarship holders to kick-off the academic year. Last Saturday, the scholarship holders met for the first time to network, learn about Sweden, innovation and sustainability, and the scholarship itself. ✨ Solomon Manzi studies the master’s programme Civil and Architectural Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and found the kick off fruitful:       💬 "The kick-off’s most memorable aspect was its vastly multicultural composition, yet unified agenda and purpose. For me—it felt (and actually was) a microcosm of the globe, with every continent and culture represented among the SI scholars. We got multiple opportunities to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learnt to celebrate our diversity the uniquely Swedish way." Cultural exchange is a cornerstone of the Swedish Institute's mission. We work to build relationships that strengthen a sustainable, free and democratic society, a particularly urgent task in these times. In our work, people from different parts of the world come together. Despite differences in language and culture, there is often a mutual and curious interest in each other. Through the exchange of ideas, knowledge and traditions - relations are built and new perspectives gained. At the end of May, the Swedish Institute's scholarship recipients gathered at Stockholm City Hall to celebrate the completion of their university studies in Sweden. It was an evening filled with mutual joy and pride. With new knowledge and experiences from Sweden, 337 persons from 42 different countries are ready to face the future! Photo: Magnus Liam Karlsson

It's a wrap! 🤩 Last weekend we carried out the last self-leadership programme for this spring. 109 scholarship holders from 41 countries participated and it was a success! 🎉 🧰 The self-leadership programme is an offer within the Network for Global Professionals, a network every scholarship holder becomes a member of during their time in Sweden. Programme Manager from the Swedish Institute, Johanna Lundin shares: 💬 – The self-leadership programme is very appreciated by our scholarship holders. We want to provide opportunities that allow for scholars to share experiences that hopefully lead to collaborations after the programme. The knowledge and practical tools covered in the programme are meant to provide the scholarship holders with a toolkit they can use in their careers and in making a change in the world. ⚕️🛠️🌱 Scholarship holders are offered a programme based on experimental learning methods, simulations, reflections and sharing. The sessions are built on theoretical frameworks within leadership, neuroscience and group dynamics, and supported by key notes from experts and practitioners in the specific study areas. The themes of this spring were Global Health, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability. The Swedish Institute recognises that the only way to reach a sustainable future for all is by working together. 🤝 Through our scholarship programme we manage to empower global professionals who shares this ambition and who want to build their capacity to act and bring about change in their home countries. 🌍 👋 A great example is scholarship holder Jonathan Zepeda Villela. Jonathan studies a master’s in knowledge-based entrepreneurship and has long had the ambition to develop solutions for a more sustainable and accessible housing sector in his country: 💬- Being a Honduran, I’ve seen first-hand the dark side of the housing market and how inaccessible it is. Many houses are made of cheap metal that is hammered onto a wooden frame, which leads to a series of health issues as the metal will be rusting over time. When it was time for me to buy a house, I wanted to source my house out of something that was not metal or concrete as I don’t find it aesthetically pleasing. I also have an understanding for how concrete is sourced, how underserved regions mine their own land just to export this product as a raw material without getting any of the benefits. I wanted to find a different way, a way that I support, and I found rammed earth. Having worked in the real-estate market in the Americas, I was able to leverage my experience within the market to see if it was financially feasible for me to source my house this way. Long story short, I ended up not buying the house, I ended up here in Sweden instead. During his studies, Jonathan developed a business plan to launch a company in the field of sustainable and accessible housing, he managed to secure funding through university contacts and he is on his way to realise his dream. 🌍 🌿 Sweden and the world are facing significant challenges that require sustainable solutions and collaboration is key to success. This is why the Swedish Institute builds relationships, creates networks, and promotes knowledge exchange across national borders. Every year, we award around 300 scholarships for students from 41 countries worldwide through the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals. The scholarship programme specifically targets global professionals with the ambition to strengthen their work for sustainability and develop their capacity to act and bring about change in their home countries. Through our scholarship programme, we emphasise on education which is aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, and which will equip our scholarship holders with tools to bring about change. These scholars remain key persons for continued exchange and collaboration in higher education and research, but also in the international dialogue on democracy, human rights, sustainability, and equality. Sweden aims to be a partner in the green and digital transition, and SI fosters partnerships for collaboration, education, research, and innovation across national borders. We need to work together to meet the global challenges and create a sustainable future. ---- #GreenTransition #SIscholarship Photos: 1/ Magnus Liam Karlsson 2/ Lieselotte van der Meijs 3/ Magnus Liam Karlsson
