IKEA - designed to shape climate action We all know that a trip to Ikea is an adventure. With play areas, delicious food, and a guided tour of products. I first encountered Ikea as a kid living in Sweden, furniture buying was a family outing. Then in Germany I built my whole kitchen from Ikea. When you rent in Munich there is no kitchen installed. But for a small apartment Ikea had everything we needed. I got good at assembling cupboard doors. In the US, all my kids' shelves are from Ikea, including the boxes to hide some of daughter's eclectic collections. Ikea is also shaping our behavior through its sustainability products and services. It has sustainability products through out the store, in particular LED bulbs are a must. But it also has created a specific space for consumers to find sustainability products in one place. Just by the restaurant. Even in the restaurant, they are making huge strides with plant based products. Healthy, tasty, and sustainable plant based Swedish meatballs. IKEA understands the challenges of recycling and are providing recycling, resell, and refurbishing services so products last longer. I most loved Karen Pflug's observation that canny Scots like my family have been carefully saving for years. She said canny is now cool! But there is one point where I believe Ikea could consider a different tact. The I-Way approach to supplier compliance. I understand the need to provide guidance and to meet Scope 3 targets. But when we approach suppliers with I-Way or the highway type leadership, we are not leveraging their strengths as innovators and experts who can help accelerate change through peer learning collaboratives. Peer learning collaboratives are an evidence based tool which accelerates the sharing of best practices. Companies can provide funding and resources for such networks of on the ground leaders, including covering meeting and travel costs, providing computers and other communication support, and sharing multi-media tools and know how for disseminating information at scale. Peer learning collaboratives have intentional experimental phases with learning cycles. Companies can provide the funding for the pilot testing and evaluation. Peer learning collaboratives are not only a shared decision making process, they ensure that practitioners are seen as expert leaders who can develop and share best practices. Leaders are empowered to drive change with the recognition of their experience, local expertise, and ability to engage and persuade others. The more companies can approach collaboration as a reciprocal we-way of operating, the more we will meet our targets and scale change long term.
