We can now continue working on an important social issue that affects everyone's health and is very topical in Europe in terms of green generation of electricity", says Nazanin Emami. *** Short about the winning projects from the website by Luleå University of Technology: Alberto Vomiero's project will contribute to the development of fossil-free steel in northern Sweden and to a large-scale hydrogen production that will benefit society as a whole. Io Antonopoulou harnesses solar energy to produce clean energy using photosynthetic microalgae, a solution for future carbon capture and hydrogen production. Joel Sundström will optimise an already developed process in order to develop more robust water turbines with a longer service life and create a balance between power generation and power consumption. Investing in fossil-free steel production requires large amounts of fossil-free electricity. Nazanin Emamis project is about replacing PFAS materials such as PTFE and Teflon, which are currently used to reduce friction. A key question in the establishment of new hydrogen plants is how these can be placed in relation to the surroundings and what distances are required from different parts of the plant. The guidance on how this should be determined has been limited, which has meant that the issue has been handled differently in different projects, as many actors have testified to. Energigas Sweden's guidance for filling stations – H2-TSA – as well as MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency)'s planned rules for hydrogen plants can be expected to lead to more efficient and uniform management in the future. However, it has turned out that there is a lack of knowledge to be able to determine relevant distances, which has forced conservative assumptions on the part of the rule writers, something that complicates and makes installation more expensive. For some applications, such as hydrogen pipelines, there is currently a complete lack of guidance. Even for large-scale installations, where H2-TSA does not provide any guidance, the situation is unclear, explains Marcus Runefors, Senior Lecturer in Fire Engineering at LTH, as sub-project leader in the research project Hydrogen Safety and Improved Permit Processes, H2SIPP. Novana is a subsidiary of Neometals, which has pioneered groundbreaking circular technology to produce high-purity vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) from slag, a byproduct of steelmaking. The production also consumes CO2 as part of the process, significantly reducing the impacts in comparison to traditional mining and processing technologies. This initial investment is designed to facilitate the project’s growth by securing further funding.
