🌟 Final TAILOR #ImpactStory of the Series! 🌟 As AI rapidly advances, the European Union is taking a pivotal role in ensuring this powerful technology is developed responsibly, grounded in ethical standards and human-centric values. The TAILOR Network, a visionary research initiative funded by the EU, is leading efforts to shape the future of #TrustworthyAI through #safety, #transparency, and #collaboration. At the forefront of this movement is Fredrik Heintz, whose leadership has been instrumental in steering the network toward impactful solutions: "The EU initiative is what sparked our efforts. Our mission has been to establish the scientific foundations for trustworthy AI and help organizations implement these principles effectively." Heintz highlights the importance of adhering to eight ethical principles, essential for ensuring trust in AI: "We’re working on developing a technical solution that guarantees AI models meet these ethical standards, reinforcing transparency, accountability, and trustworthiness at every stage." But the TAILOR Network's influence goes beyond research—it aims to shape policy, raise public awareness, and drive the broader societal conversation on AI’s role in the future. Heintz sees this ongoing collaboration as critical: "AI is evolving rapidly, and we must keep pace by iterating, developing new tools, and ensuring that these advances benefit society as a whole." 🌟 New #TAILORImpactStory Alert! 🌟 Safe and powerful AutoAI solutions are set to revolutionize research and innovation across numerous domains. Led by Holger Hoos' group, these solutions aim to democratize AI, empowering domain experts to develop their own #AItools without needing deep programming knowledge. AI Scientists Julia Wąsala and Annelot Bosman are working to make AI more accessible and trustworthy. #AutoAI allows experts to create models tailored to their data, streamlining processes, reducing errors, and saving valuable time. In earth observation, for example, AutoAI can help scientists tackle major environmental challenges by automating the design of machine learning models, making them faster, more accurate, and less biased. Not only does AutoAI reduce the need for extensive computational resources, but it also includes verification features to ensure that neural networks are safe from the start. This approach will increase trustworthiness, reduce energy use, and open new possibilities for experts across all fields. As Annelot Bosman explains, "With AutoAI frameworks, users don’t need in-depth programming knowledge but must understand machine learning theory—a skill that can be learned in class." 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: 𝐌𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐍𝐑𝐈𝐀 After three months in a French paradise, I recently returned home to resume my "regular" life. In this post, I briefly recall my experience at Inria Rennes, where I worked as a visiting researcher in the cybersecurity team PIRAT https://lnkd.in/dwbhA-gB. 𝐀 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐍𝐑𝐈𝐀 The research visit was executed under the umbrella of the TAILOR Network of Excellence Centres on Trustworthy AI (www.tailor-network.eu) Connectivity Fund. TAILOR is an EU project aiming to develop a network of research excellence centers to promote research on Trustworthy AI. Since INRIA is a TAILOR member with many similarities to my research, I contacted them. After several e-mails and meetings, the deal was sealed! 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨 Our research aimed to explore the transferability of intrusion knowledge between different network environments. Since computer networks are very diverse, their traffic also resembles very diverse statistical patterns. Therefore, trained models in one network environment are hardly transferable to other networks. For this reason, machine learning-based detection is often unreliable, and its usability in production environments is rather limited. Throughout the research, we aimed to explore similarities of different networks, establish baselines, and define which attack patterns can be transferred. Successful knowledge transfer can then improve the robustness, reliability, and trustworthiness of ML-based network intrusion detection. 𝐀𝐧𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬? Yes! Our preliminary experiments confirmed that direct transfer of even very similar attacks across different networks fails miserably as the attacks are characterized by vastly different features. Nevertheless, transfer learning techniques working with feature mapping could successfully find common feature representations to make the attacks detectable across datasets, even in an unsupervised manner! 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, as it undoubtedly improved not only my professional but also personal aspects. It was the longest time I have lived abroad. I met fantastic people and visited many new places I would never have otherwise. I learned that math and statistics are not to be feared but are rather the key when discussing transfer learning more formally. My thanks to my INRIA supervisors, Han Yufei and Pierre-François Gimenez, for their time, TAILOR Network of Excellence Centres on Trustworthy AI for funding, and undoubtedly, Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies for managing all the necessary paperwork to make the project happen. It enriched my life a lot, and as we see the topic interesting, we strive to work on it further and aim to publish our results in a scientific venue soon enough. How thrilling, indeed! #research #inria #cybersecurity #machinelearning #ai #xai #nids #ids #networking

🌟 New TAILOR #ImpactStory Alert! 🌟 AI-powered collaboration tools are revolutionizing how researchers find and connect with new collaborators. Within the TAILOR Network, tasked with developing #TrustworthyAI, these tools not only open up exciting opportunities but also allow researchers to put theory into practice. Leading the charge at the University of Bristol are Miquel Perelló Nieto and Peter Flach. One of the first tools, SubSift, was originally designed to assign reviewers to articles for major data mining conferences. It has since evolved, showcasing its ability to match queries to the expertise of TAILOR partner leads and offering explainability to ensure transparency and compliance with trustworthy AI guidelines. SubSift, used alongside SynTeam (developed by Carles Sierra at IIIA-CSIC, Barcelona), has proven its worth at TAILOR events like the summer school and conferences. “SubSift was also used at the 3rd TAILOR conference to discover potential connections among attendees with favorable results," explains Perello-Nieto. "We see great potential for applying these tools to the broader research community.” Discover more about these AI-powered tools and their impact: https://lnkd.in/d2zZ2Kte Discover the other Impact Stories on the TAILOR website: https://lnkd.in/dYKMuYjb #AI #Collaboration #Innovation #ResearchCommunity #AItools #Transparency #SynTeam #SubSift #TAILORNetwork
