"The European Commission president said today that ‘#water resilience is a big priority’ for her second mandate as she picked Jessika Roswall for her new environment policy chief." reported Euronews. As the #climate crisis is upon us, SIWI keeps advocating for #freshwater to be more included in #resilience strategies. Roswall's leadership will be critical in creating a cohesive water policy, balancing environmental protection with economic priorities, and ensuring a water-secure, carbon-neutral #Europe by 2050. https://lnkd.in/dS4ndh25 --- #SIWI #WaterGovernance #WaterCrisis #WaterSolutions #WaterAction

We use our knowledge and convening power to strengthen water governance for a just, prosperous, and sustainable future
Om oss
SIWI is a water institute. We focus on a range of research and development topics within and around water that support decision-makers world. We believe that the best way to tackle water crises, and help bring about lasting change, is to strengthen water governance among public and private actors alike. SIWI’s strong, international team of knowledge-generators, convenors, facilitators, and trainers works to strengthen the systems and processes that govern access to and protection of fresh water, with the overarching aim to contribute to poverty eradication. SIWI also hosts several flagship programmes, including the UNDP-SIWI Water Governance Facility, the International Centre for Water Cooperation (ICWC), the Action Platform for Source-to-Sea Management (S2S Platform), and the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA). Through the Swedish Water House, we connect Swedish water stakeholders with each other and to international processes. This year at #COP27, we are proud to be a partner of the Water Pavilion, mobilising to put water at the heart of climate action. #Water4Climate

SIWI, in close collaboration with UNICEF, is pleased to present the latest publication, "Gender Transformative WASH-BAT Analysis." This Technical Note offers actionable insights and recommendations for addressing gender inequalities within Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (#WASH) through the use of the WASH Bottleneck Analysis Tool (#WASHBAT). Initiated by Virginia Mariezcurrena, Senior Program Manager at SIWI, and Jorge Alvarez-Sala Torreano, WASH Specialist - Water Supply Sustainability at UNICEF, this work draws on extensive expertise in #WaterGovernance, #accountability, and #gender to provide practical guidance for WASH practitioners. Mariezcurrena's contributions, alongside those of co-authors Ricard Giné Garriga and Antoine Delepière, integrate valuable case studies and best practices from WASH-BAT workshops. The paper highlights concrete steps to implement more gender-sensitive, responsive, and transformative approaches within WASH systems and service delivery. This publication underscores SIWI's commitment to advancing gender equality in WASH and supporting practitioners globally in developing inclusive, sustainable WASH solutions. --- #SIWI #UNICEF #WaterGovernance #WASH #GEnderGap #GenderEquality #SustainableDevelopment #SDG6 #GenderTransformativeApproaches

As facilitators of multi-stakeholder processes in international contexts, understanding gender dynamics is crucial for ensuring equal meeting participation. The recently published Technical Note by UNICEF highlights good practices for integrating a gender-transformative perspective into WASH Bottlenecks analysis tool (WASH BAT) and participatory approaches. Proud to have co-authored this piece with Ricard Giné Garriga and Antoine Delepière, with significant contributions from Jorge Alvarez-Sala Torreano and Anu Paudal Gautam from @UNICEF HQ. Additional thanks to Isabel Alvarez Murillo, PMP, for the collaborative effort in the original draft. Check it out for valuable insights!

🌐 To reverse biodiversity loss and secure global #WaterResources, we need integrated, inclusive #WaterGovernance that prioritizes cooperation, #ClimateAdaptation, and #HumanRights. The UN’s recent initiatives, including the recognition of the right to a healthy environment (#HRHE) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#GBF), are critical steps to accelerate progress on the #2030Agenda. This white paper, published by the UNDP-SIWI Water Governance Facility, explores how international instruments like the GBF and HRHE can strengthen nature-based actions for water governance. By aligning these frameworks, we can address the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of water management and support #SustainableDevelopment Goals (#SDGs). The paper identifies key opportunities to evolve water governance systems to meet growing challenges such as #ClimateChange, #urbanization, and #population growth. Let's advance understanding of these linkages to ensure a sustainable future for water and biodiversity. 🌊🌱 📄Read the paper ▶️ https://bit.ly/472NaYX

We are honoured that SIWI's work on #NDCs be featured in the UN High-Level Climate Champions's report. SIWI's policy brief, led by SIWI's David Hebart-Coleman, aims to look at the current bottlenecks in National Determined Contributions implementation and to offer examples from countries on how these national climate plans can be achieved in practice. Access the full report "Whole-of Society Support For Strong National Climate Plans’ and access resources to support #ClimateAction with the link below ⤵️
With countries working to update their national climate plans in line with the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5C, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions have published a report showcasing support from all levels of society and all sectors of the economy to help design and implement high quality plans. We often talk about engaging youth in climate discussions, but older people are also crucial in tackling #ClimateChange. As 1st October marks the UN’s International Day of #OlderPersons, read on this insight from Gary Haq, PhD at SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute on why including older people is essential to create stronger, more resilient communities. 🌍 🌎 🌏
“Pretty early on, I realised that with an ageing population and a changing climate, older people were going to be seriously affected.” Reflecting on the United Nations's International Day of Older Persons, Senior Research Associate Gary Haq, PhD discusses how older adults are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, while also possessing valuable knowledge, resources, and perspectives for climate action. Gary highlights three key actions to better support older people in the face of climate change: 1. Ensure older people's needs are integrated into climate and social protection policies. 2. Improve data collection on how climate change impacts different age groups, especially older people. 3. Invest in initiatives that promote healthy ageing and resilience among older populations. Thank you Nureen Faiza Anisha for your contribution to this landmark report, and your insight on why it is critical to consider #freshwater systems in climate #mitigation strategies. 🌊🌅 💦
Received a long-awaited email from Malin Lundberg Ingemarsson last month, mentioning the launch of the full report, 'The essential drop to reach Net-Zero: Unpacking Freshwater's Role in Climate Change Mitigation,' at World Water Week 2024 in Stockholm. After over two years of rigorous research and collaboration, this report brings forward a groundbreaking perspective on water’s vital role in climate mitigation—a role much greater than commonly understood. I had the privilege to lead Chapter 5: Mitigation Measures in Freshwater Ecosystems, where we explored the complex dynamics of aquatic environments—how they serve as sources and/or sinks for greenhouse gases. Our chapter delves into the crucial role of freshwater systems in carbon storage and the necessity of conservation and restoration efforts, while advocating for integrated, holistic approaches to manage both land and water systems effectively. It was a huge privilege and great delight to work with a fantastic team of scientists and experts across the globe. Want to share my heartfelt gratitude to Malin Lundberg Ingemarsson and other colleagues for all their patience and hard work. All those oddly-timed meetings across time zones have now transformed into a tangible success, and I couldn’t be more proud to have been part of this pioneering effort. Here’s to future research and actions that prioritize water as a cornerstone for effective climate solutions! #ClimateAction #WaterForClimate #NetZero #FreshwaterMitigation #WorldWaterWeek2024 #Sustainability #ClimateSolutions
