Mangroves support 126 million fishing days per year worldwide, providing critical nutrition and livelihoods. But without additional conservation of these ecosystems, we are at risk of losing 17 million of those fishing days, according to IUCN. SEI's Charlotte Wagner, PhD and Jonathan Green published an op-ed in International Institute for Sustainable Development's SDG Knowledge Hub earlier this month highlighting the importance of ocean and small fishery health more widely, arguing that ocean pollution merits more attention if we are to solve global hunger.👇 #MangroveDay #Mangroves #Oceans #OceanPollution #Fisheries #OceanEcosystems

As we celebrate UNESCO 's #MangroveDay, it's important to reflect on the significance of mangroves in the Wider Caribbean and imagine a world without them. Picture our coasts without these natural defenders: ⛈️ Coastal erosion would worsen, leaving communities exposed to devastating storm surges and hurricanes. 🌊Shorelines would deteriorate rapidly, putting homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure at risk. 🐠The diverse wildlife thriving in mangrove ecosystems would be in danger, disrupting marine food webs and fisheries that many communities depend on. 🌡️Efforts to combat climate change would be greatly hindered, since mangroves have exceptional carbon storage capabilities. Our Resilient Coasts project in the Caribbean region is dedicated to protecting and rehabilitating mangrove ecosystems by collaborating with key local partners, involving the local communities, and developing support through climate finance. We aim to secure a resilient future for our coastal regions by conserving and restoring mangroves and other coastal ecosystems. Let's unite in our efforts to protect these invaluable ecosystems today, ensuring the safety and prosperity of future generations. Young leaders recognize the urgency needed to tackle super pollutants in air pollution and alleviate climate and health impacts. The first Youth Action for Climate and Clean Air webinar ignited a powerful conversation about the role of young people on air quality action. The webinar – convened by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition with support from SEI and partners – delved into the current youth engagement landscape on air quality, identified barriers, and discussed strategies to overcome them, which include: 🧰 Creating supportive environments and empowering young people with the knowledge and tools to drive air quality initiatives. 👂 Understanding the challenges faced by young people to develop effective strategies for scaling up youth-led actions. 🤝 Collaborating between young people, policymakers, businesses and other stakeholders to develop holistic solutions and drive large-scale impact. Hear from the experts who shared invaluable insights and examples on how young people can drive air quality initiatives effectively and create a conducive environment for change 👇 #AirPollution #AirQuality #YouthAction #SuperPollutants

Measuring the Effectiveness of #Adaptation: Insights from IFAD and GEF Projects | CGIAR Climate Impact Platform Webinar #5 Speaking at this webinar, Professor Edward Carr from the SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute shared his expertise on analyzing GEF’s adaptation portfolio, addressing the challenges and importance of measuring adaptation. Prof Carr emphasized that " We have to measure adaptation. We have to measure it meaningfully." A global goal on adaptation that is as vaguely worded as the one we've been living under and an adaptation gap that talks about large amounts of money that are needed without explaining what that money is needed for simply isn't moving the adaptation forward." 📺 Webinar | Discover what we've learnt about air quality in UK schools The SAMHE (Schools’ Air quality Monitoring for Health and Education) project aims to help researchers better understand air quality in UK schools. We have analyzed indoor air quality data received from 580 schools across the UK during the 2023-24 school year. In this new webinar, we share our findings – presented by Sarah West, Director of our centre at University of York, together with Henry Burridge, Alice Handy and Sam Wood from Imperial College London. #SAMHE #IndoorAirQuality #AirQuality #AirPollution #IAQ #HealthyAir #AirPollution #HealthySchools

A new version of LEAP is here! A wide slate of new features makes SEI’s Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP) easier to use and more comprehensive than ever for energy modelling, policymaking and research. As countries face the deadline to submit their next set of Paris Agreement commitments to the UN in 2025, the new LEAP version makes it easier for countries to develop their NDCs, while also allowing them to build upon earlier analyses they may have created in the past. But you don't have to be part of a national government to benefit from LEAP. More than 68K users across the globe apply LEAP to research, policy and planning. 🌽 If you missed our June webinar on One Health solutions for a more sustainable food system, fear not! You can watch it any time. COP28 saw an unprecedented focus on the climate impact of the food system. Over 150 governments committed to integrate agriculture and food considerations in their next Nationally Determined Contributions. This heightened attention on the need to transform food systems to align with climate goals raises both new opportunities and challenges for the One Health approach, which underscores the need to consider the interlinkages between human, animal and environmental health to avoid unintended consequences from a single-lens focus. 🖥️ Watch this expert discussion: https://buff.ly/3UZo0Vw #OneHealth #FoodSystems #NDCs #Agriculture #AnimalAgriculture

The UNEA-6 Resolution on Air Quality has acknowledged the Integrated Assessment of Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa, providing a boost to air quality and sustainable development efforts on the continent. In this op-ed originally published by the Clean Air Journal, our researchers and partners highlight the measures recommended by the African Assessment across five key development areas: transport, residential energy, energy generation and industry, agriculture, and waste management. These measures can deliver clean air, meet national development goals, and provide other climate benefits for Africa, including in waste management, increased renewable energy, and sustainable mobility. It's a win-win for Africa as the recommendations align with the sustainable development goals and the African Union's Agenda 2063. 🔗 Read the full op-ed in Clean Air Journal: https://buff.ly/4d5fdsG 🖼️ Graphic by Climate & Clean Air Coalition from the Integrated Assessment of Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa.
